I Picked to Learn Fingerstyle Guitar!?

Keep the learn guitar questions coming! I liked this one:

Question: Hello everyone, recently, I got inspired by my friend to play fingerstyle guitar. He showed me several great fingerstyle guitarist (e.g Sungha Jung, Ulli Boeg, Tommy Emmanuel, Andy McKee and etc) so I’m seriously interested in learning. My question is, what do I need to know before I start? How would the progress be and which book that are good so I can buy it?

Thanks alot!

Answer: Before going into anything technical or instructional, one does have to learn to listen to those who create such wonderful style in guitar playing as indicated. Through their recordings or at their performances.

Years ago it was Chet Atkins for me that created such a desire to even pick up the guitar as a choice in instruments. I couldn’t get enough of his records even before I had a guitar of my own. I loved the music he expressed through his mastery. And when I did get my first guitar, I played along with those records.

I didn’t realize at the time but it sort of fell together over time to achieve such a style. What helped was to first conquer cross-picking patterns, strokes, and rhythm techniques soon enough in my first years of learning. I dropped the pick, grew nails on my right hand and replaced that one pick, with three natural ones to do the work instead. (Oh, but I still use picks, but no longer ask for one in any music store.)

I wasn’t certain what style I had achieved until I saw Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul and Mary) play live and realized I have been using my fingers as he had, for years. More of a banjo technique. Which is how many of country music fame went from, to the guitar. ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ was one of the first songs I could play his style.

And this goes back to ol’ Merle Travis and his style, who inspired Chet Atkins to be so creative in his works when he use to listen to him over the radio in his past.

Not too long ago, when trying out one of my last favorite guitars at a music store (I bought the thing shortly after), the manager told me that I sounded like this Doyle Dykes fella and I should go see him at one of his concerts. And I did.

Doyle use to play backup with ol’ Mr. Guitar, Chet Atkins, on many of his recordings. Neat-O.

Fancy that. Just listen to the music, and eventually, you’ll get the hang of it too.

And to mention as well, Tommy Emmanuel was inspired by Chet Atkins too. Talk about a ‘Certified Guitar Picker’ indeed. Heard the man play.

Wow.

(Check him out on your local PBS television station line up sometime. He’s been part of their program lately and provide recordings for their ‘donations’ in support of public broadcasting.)

Enjoy the experience when you catch on.

What Classic Rock/metal Song Should I Learn to Play on Guitar?

Well here’s a question I just had to answering straight away:

Question: i’v been playing for about a year now. i’m a teenager in highschool and i’m tryin to figure out what would be best for me to play when the school talent show comes up. i’m more interested in high pitch and quick paste songs. and plus, my guitar is missing the low e string. i thought to myself, what if i could learn to play a fast song without that string. and i thought to myself, i could try iron maiden’s afraid to shoot strangers. any advice for others i could try?
Answer: anything from the ramones is basically all power chords , beat on a brat , but dude seriously if you don’t have the talent to play guitar that good don’t even go on stage it would make you look bad for a talent show give yourself sometime and start playing songs by Led Zep,, and if your guitar is missing a string get that fix or else it would like as if you have borrow your guitar from your little brother

Question: Hey guys!
Basically, I bought a Yamaha, beginner guitar and I really want to learn how to play it because I don’t want the guitar going to waste and just sitting there!
So, I’m asking, what is the best way to learn guitar? Whether that be buying a DVD, or self teaching by learning notes. I don’t know where to start. Oh and also, how do I know if I need to tune my guitar?
PS – I’m not really considering going to guitar lessons because I don’t want to spend so much money and what not.
All answers are appreciated,
Thank you!

I Want to Learn to Play Guitar Myself Without a Teacher, Any Advice?

What’s this week’s question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: I just got an alvarez guitar a week ago so it’s acoustic
Answer: All I can say is just practice. With the internet, you can watch youtube videos of certain chords and tricks on the guitar. That is what really helped me. You can also buy guitar books from the bookstore. I taught myself how to play. If you are really dedicated to it, it shouldn’t take you too long to learn, at least the basic songs, if you practice a lot. I don’t really think you need a teacher to be honest, unless you are really struggling.
