They aren't necessary but may be helpful. That being said, not ALL teachers are helpful...I took lessons for a month or two and all he did was teach me a new riff every week. Some people find it better to teach themselves. It really all depends on how willing you are to find something new for yourself to learn. Also, it depends on what you want to get out of playing..

Yes. I found them pretty useful, if the teacher is good. Having someone show you how things work. You can get this online but nothing in depth, and you can't ask questions. It helped me understand what genres of music I wanted to play and get past those initial moments when you want to drop it. You don't need a whole lot, the guitar is a relatively easy instrument to pick up in terms of basics its not like drums or violin and you don't need to have very good hand eye coordination like with the drums. After you've had a few you can practice by yourself.

Yeah, just make sure you take lessons from someone who knows what they're doing. make sure that you're getting your money's worth and you are actually learning from them. I have been playing 11 years now and I am completely self taught. I AM very good...but I can't imagine how good I would be if I had taken lessons... Lessons teach you things that teaching yourself just can't

They are totally worth it. I've been playing for 48 years and I started taking lessons again about a year ago. It was the best thing I've done in a long while.
