Hello Porcelain!

My name is Francesco. I am a musician and have been playing guitar for over 20 years.

Yes private lessons can be expensive. Today, they can range from $20 to $70. I once went for a class in NYC that cost me $150!

But, as a musician AND as a private teacher I suggest that you don't spend all this money in tuition.

I recently found excellent an excellent solution.
I came across a home study course called "Jamorama".
It's taught by a professional musician and it's jam packed with videos
and examples that you can play on your laptop or TV over and over and study at your
own pace
I reviewed Jamorama here:

Enjoy!

Dunno about the price of lessons (I am wondering what the average rate is as well) but I'll tell you this, how often you practice (at home) is up to you, but you should be practicing at least 30 minutes daily to build up your calluses. Dipping your fingertips into rubbing alcohol after a practice session would help too.
