If you practice once a week with your instructor and that's it, then you're never going to get anywhere. What he shows you in class, you need to take home and work on that week, everyday, for hours and hours and hours. From there, you need to start reading tabs on your own for songs to play, and when you get stuck, you can ask your instructor how to play them. You need to do both. I have used a course in which you learn via DVDs. They are designed at beginners and help you develop your guitar playing.
