there is a site, mysongbook.com, that has all sort of useful bits and although it doesn’t teach in the sense of the word, there is a lot you can pick up!

there’s tons and tons of decent videos on how to play, techniques, how to play particular songs, etc

You can subscribe to videos too and request videos to be made if you wish.

Use the net to ‘guitar tuning’ and ‘read guitar tabs’ (just type these into your browser or wikipedia)
Then I can recommend scooting the net for guitar tabs and just trying to play anything basic…start with one or two simple chords, focusing on playing them comfortably and cleanly… and go from there!
The links people have given on here also look really helpful…

You might also visit a good music shop and pick up a guitar for beginners book. Most will come with a DVD or CD that will help you to learn the basics and they shouldn’t be too expensive!

I am sceptical of learning guitar through online study.It is like learning swimming through correspondence course.If you want to just play a few songs it may be ok.If you want to master guitar and become good at it it requires professional training.There may be youth clubs and associations around you imparting training.Church music groups are other resource centres.It will be better for you to pay and learn in the long run.Good Luck
