Who's the Best Guitar Player of All Time (in Your Opinion)?

A guitar players question that should definitely interest you all this week

Question: Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Jeff Lynn, Jimi Hendrix, Mark Knopfler, Brian May, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon…

They’re all great but whose playing style is superior?

Answer: You can’t really have a superior playing style, as the technique for styles is different. An example of this is that out of necessity, two fingered chords, were a feature of Django’s playing. (cos only two fingers worked !) I think you are probably talking about guitar and not bass players, so you can discount Bruce and McCartney. I reckon it’s a case of take anyone from the following : Chet Atkins, Albert Lee, Peter Green, Jimi Hendrix, Little Milton (This guy was BB King ++++), Ry Cooder, the list is endless and the answer is impossible. A message to the person asking the question, while you are contemplating the answer, give this chap a listen….www.kirklorange.com

I am amazed no one has yet mentioned the Great Roy Clark. He is for sure one of the greates if not THE Greates guitar player of all time. I have been following Roy Clark since 1966 when he played on a TV station in LA.

I went to see him at The Ozark Folk Center in Mt. View, AR this past labor day. Roy Clark is just awesome.

  19. masashilynne says:

omg Jimi Hendrix is by far the best guitar player of all time!

  20. annmarie says:

    Neil Young.

His guitar is an extension of his body, his mind, and his soul.

You know why he’s called the godfather of grunge? Because he invented the style of playing the "muddy" guitar. It has to do with the way it’s tuned, the amps and the mix in the studio. It is actually out of tune — almost out of tune. There are volumes written on this subject.

  21. ono says:

    Eric Clapton
    Jimmy Page
Gypsy Kings (did you know that Gypsy Kings are actually French, not Spanish?)

At this moment in time, I’ll say Joe satriani……. But moods change, so ask me Tomorrow, and I might say Hendix or Knopfler!!!!

All round – Julian Bream (went to school with his son), or perhaps Hendrix. Loved hearing Paco Penya play flamenco too – went to the greatest English boarding school for it’s music program !

Metal/hard rock Randy Rhoads – just listen to Crazy Train – it’s like listening to Pavarotti – the control & precision is awesome !

  27. veteranpainter says:

In 1964 Eric Clapton told a lot of people; "IN five(5) years I’m going to be the greatest guitar player in the world". As 1969 rolled into1970 Mr. Clapton held that distinction. Considering all of the greats you’ve listed, he done something. Someone you haven’t mentioned is Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull)………It was him that is spoken in the same breath as Clapton….sorry……LATER

  28. commiefreek says:

i cannot believe no one has mentioned Jimmy Page just listen to led zeppelin the solo’s the riffs and the many different musical styles (loads of different world music influences). most of the other great guitarists play only one or two styles i.e rock or blues. no-one else is as varied and consistently brilliant as Jimmy Page. Just listen to Kashmir or stairway to heaven

  29. mike_dromara says:

I have no opinion who it WAS. Bit I sure as hell know who it was NOT. It WAS NOT Hendrix. That was just noise he made. It had no structure, no brginning, no end and no point. I often wonder if he could have reproduced the same noise over and over, or was it ,as I suspect "made up as he went along"
It wasn’t great, just noise. Or if you prefer "Great noise" but noise just the same.

  30. rainbowscooby69 says:

  34. FOZ says:

Jimi Hendrix is my choice as far as a player is concerned, he could do all the others except Eric Clapton my second choice, who I like to listen to the most.

  39. DickMc. says:

It all depends on whether you are basing the question on lead guitar or bass guitar. Bass guitar is easy , Mick Karn from the eighties group "Japan". Lead guitar I’d say either Slash from Gun’s N Roses or Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy).

  40. internat y says:
