We’ve had a reader question come in on the subject of learn guitar. Let’s take a look:

Question: how can i choose the best guitar for me ? would metal strings be better ?
i would appreciate it much if anyone can show me the right direction :)
thanks alot in advance.
Answer: The type of guitar that you need to buy depends on the music you’d like to play.

If you are looking to play flamenco or classical music, you should look to buy a nylon string guitar. These are usually smaller bodied guitars with wide, flat necks and "plastic" (nylon) strings. Most of these are about the same, so find one you like and is in your price range. Because you are just starting out, make sure you find a guitar with fret markers (white dots) on the fretboard.

Nearly any other style, you need to pick up a steel string guitar. Again, look for fret markers.

A few pointers when buying an acoustic:

*Don’t get pretty colors or finishes – the extra finish dampens your sound. Stick to the traditional spruce or cedar with a clear coat.

*Don’t get exotic woods – yes, they look cool, but they usually don’t sound good.

*Stick to the traditional body shapes – again, your tone will suffer if you don’t.

*Have somebody play the guitar while you stand a few feet away – guitars sound different when you are in front instead of in front, and you need to be sure you like the tone all the way around.

*Never buy a guitar that you haven’t played in person – all guitars sound different, even if they are the same model. Do not buy guitars online.

ONE LAST REALLY IMPORTANT THING:
The top rule in instruments is that you get what you pay for. A cheap guitar sounds cheap. For a good beginner’s guitar, expect $150-200. A good midrange acoustic will run $300 to $450.
