Should I Learn Guitar or Ukulele First?

A learn guitar question that should definitely interest you all this week

Question: I’m 16 years old, and I want to start learning how to play the guitar AND the ukulele. I have a couple of questions.

1) Should I start off learning the guitar or the ukulele first?
2) Which one is easier to learn and why?
3) What are some good acoustic guitars for beginners?
4) Am I too old to start? How long did you take to learn guitar/ukulele.

I’d appreciate any advise and information. thank you!

Answer: I suggest you learn to play guitar first. I started with guitar, and then ukulele. I don’t know how this helped, but It’s easier to start with something bigger and learn. Then you move on to the smaller things. Just trust me. If I’m wrong, then sorry. YOU ARE NOT TOO OLD TO START. I started just a few years before you, and in my opinion, 16 is a fine age to start. Good acoustic guitars? Well, I started on my dad’s epiphone. Les Pauls are nice, but on the $$ side. Good Luck!!

I started learning guitar at 21, I’m 23 now, i can learn most songs on the spot or in a few days. I started with an electric guitar, since the strings were easy to press, i could play longer but its a lot funner to play an acoustic. Fender is an okay brand. I haven’t played the ukulele but it seams the same. I’d go for the acoustic guitar first, you’d get tired of playing the ukulele all the time, its like playing with the capo all the way up front.

Congratulations on wanting to learn to play!
    1) I’d learn the uke first. It’s cheaper and less strings. Most people learn this one in a matter of days.(remember Jason Castro from Idol playing one)?
    2) Uke is easier because only 4 strings and fewer chords to learn
    3) Yamaha makes some of the best entry level acoustics out there. I’ve had 3 and loved them
    4) You are never too old to start. OK, maybe 90 is too old. On the uke, you learn a few chords and you’re set. Guitar is a life-long learning experience. I’ve been playing for 40 years and still feel I know very little about the instrament. If you want to see a cool video with a uke, go to youtube and look up "Somewhere over the Rainbow" by IZ.
