What Do I Need to Learn to Be Able to Play Guitar?

Another learn guitar question has come in this week. Let’s tackle it straight away:

Question: list please :D <3
Answer: You should probably go to a guitar store and get a beginner level acoustic guitar (maybe a Takamine Jasmine, Yamaha, or Ibanez), an electronic tuner, and some picks. Then you should ask them if they can recommend any good guitar teachers either in their store or locally and you should take lessons. The teacher will tell you everything you need to know to be able to play guitar. If you insist on learning without a teacher, then you should pick up book one of a good series of lesson books like Mel Bay, Alfred, or Hal Leonard. Go through it methodically starting on page 1 and don’t skip ahead. Master each lesson before you move on. No matter what anybody tells you, you can not learn to play guitar in 2 weeks (or months for that matter). It takes time, practice, and structured instruction.

I’m not sure what you’re getting at. You need a guitar, obviously. Most people also get some accessories like a few picks, an electronic tuner, a few spare sets of strings, a capo, a strap, and a case or gig bag for the guitar.

The best way to learn is by getting lessons with a professional guitar teacher. Most people – something like 90% – who try to self-teach fail in the attempt. If you’re serious about learning, get lessons.
