What's a Good Way to Learn the Guitar Besides Taking Lessons?

This week’s question is as follows:

Question: I’d like to try learning how to play the guitar, but I don’t know where to start. I tried taking piano lessons once, but I dropped out due to a sudden lack of enthusiasm for it. I have an acoustic guitar and I’d like to know if there’s any books or websites that can help me, preferrably at a low price. Obviously I still have to practice in order to get good, but yeah.
Answer: You could try learning the basics of notes first (basic chords, etc) and then once you master it, put notes together and you’ll get used to it (:

You could also try youtube (; haha. i was pretty lazy with learning guitar at first, but there are surprisingly a lot of guitar tutorial youtube videos out there (: i learned how to play a lot of songs just by watching and playing along.

Hope this helps ! & good luck :)

just learn what you want at that moment. starting out with lessons is one way that can deter people from continuing to play the instrument. you need to make sure playing guitar stays fun for you and its not all work.

But seriously, there are hundreds of fairly cheap books out there – just type "guitar tutor" into Amazon. To get going, learn the chords G, Em, C and D – then you can play about 50% of all popular music and 90% of all rock and roll.

Lack of enthusiasm with piano? With learning any instrument takes patience, hard work and most importantly – passion. Without a passion, you will inevitably give up.

Well i was self taught for about a year before i got a teacher, when i was a complete beginner i remember getting a little book of chords and learning those, and basic chords are a definate must for you to learn. C,A,G,E,D.
Books that will help.. i buy a magazine called Total Guitar, it has lessons in for beginners and also comes with an interactive CD with rather good video lessons. Things like that will help you.
Then other books.. try ‘guitar for dummies’ all silly titles aside, i’ve flicked through it and it’s really helpful.
