anything by Hal Leonard. However its better to go to a guitar shop who has a good guitar teacher. Books are easy to give up on and the motivation does not come from them.

Learn to read tabs. Really easy, any guitarist could show you how. Then, find some simple songs, and play along. Anything by the Ramones should do.

its easy to teach your self little riffs but its best to learn your scales first, once youve mastered scales you can play any song you want providing you know the chord sequence.

depending what sort of tunes you want to play total guitar is a good mag in the UK which has some riffs in along with a backing cd.

also check out http://www.guitarnoise.com this has everything you need to play guitar from beginners to experts.
