Does Anyone Know of Really Thorough Online Guitar Lessons?

We’ve had a reader question come in on the subject of guitar lessons. Let’s take a look:

Question: I’ve been trying to learn how to play for a while now. The problem is, I find a website that gives shit instructions for beginners and I get frustrated and quit. (Or the site lets me see the first lesson or two free and then try to rob me blind with monthly subscriptions, etc. to their site)

So if anyone knows of any (free) really thorough, step by step guitar lessons sites, I’d greatly appreciate it.
Like, I find one a while ago that broke things down nicely. It showed you a few chords, had you practice them in different patterns until you were familiar and then moved on. Unfortunately, I completely forgot what the name of that site was. >__>

Answer: I think this one is very easy to follow.

I Would Like to Learn How to Play Guitar, but I Don't Know a Good Guitar to Buy. What is a Good Guitar?

A learn guitar question that should definitely interest you all this week

Question: Hello, I would like to play guitar. (I’m 14, for your information. [if that helps])
I’m just not sure what a good guitar to start with would be though, could I have any suggestions?
( Please? <3 ) I would like to play electric, but if acoustic is better for beginners, then that would work too.
I would also like to order one online, because that would work better for me.
Answer: Forget what those guys are saying.

Buy an ESP guitar. They are amazing quality and come with great pickups. They also have a shorter neck, so its easy to play for someone your age. If you’re on a budget, I’d go with the ESP EC-50. I own one of those and its siiiccck. best stock pickups i’ve ever heard. :)

You can find it on musiciansfriend.com you can also look there and sort by price to find one you like :)

What Are the Benefits of Taking Guitar Lessons Compared to Learning from YouTube?

Keep the learn guitar questions coming! I liked this one:

Question: What Are the Benefits of Taking Guitar Lessons Compared to Learning from YouTube?
Answer: Nothing is better than having an actual live teacher in front of you. They can observe your playing and point out what’s good and what needs work. They will often draw your attention to things that you never would have noticed as well. They can jam with you, which is one of the best ways to learn (it’s also why I specified having a live teacher in the room, you can’t jam over the internet) They will craft a lesson plan specifically for you, complete with exercises that will help you target your weak ares.

There really is no comparison. One on one private tuition has always been the best way to learn a musical instrument, and nothing is posed to change that.

How to Tell My Guitar Teacher I Don't Want Lessons Anymore?

Well here’s a question I just had to answering straight away:

Question: Hey.
I’ve had a few different guitar teachers and they’ve all been trying to teach me how to play guitar like a pro but all I want is to learn how to play some of my favorite songs.
Then my friends told me there’s this guitar teacher that teaches cool rock & pop songs so I gave him a call. He turned out to be a teacher like all the others. We had guitar lessons for the whole school year but I’m sick and tired of it. I want my parents to tell him I don’t want lessons anymore but they said I have to do it.
I know he’s going to give me a call on September 1st and I want to prepare what I’m going to say.
Any ideas?
Thanks so so much xxxx
Answer: First of all tell him you thank him for taking his time out to teach you. Make up an excuse such as saying: "I’ve learned what I wanted to learn", "I’m really busy with other things" or "I want to play another instrument and don’t want to play guitar anymore". I doubt that he will be mad at you for not wanting him to teach you anymore, he was lucky to be payed for it.

Good Luck :)

I Want to Learn How to Play Guitar?

What a great learn guitar question:

Question: Whats a cheap but good brand of acoustic guitar?
What size do i need (if there r sizes?) i am 5′6" and im 14
Can i learn alone with a book, ratherthan taking lessons?
Pick or finger plucking for beginners?
Any other tips?
And also… How to convince parents its a good idea and not just a phase!
Answer: I wrote out a very long piece of advice thoroughly answering all your questions. However, it was too long to post on this site, so I made a public blog post about it since the advice I gave would be good for anyone starting the guitar. I re-worded your questions and published the post in my new music blog. The link is below. I hope this is useful.

I Picked to Learn Fingerstyle Guitar!?

Keep the learn guitar questions coming! I liked this one:

Question: Hello everyone, recently, I got inspired by my friend to play fingerstyle guitar. He showed me several great fingerstyle guitarist (e.g Sungha Jung, Ulli Boeg, Tommy Emmanuel, Andy McKee and etc) so I’m seriously interested in learning. My question is, what do I need to know before I start? How would the progress be and which book that are good so I can buy it?

Thanks alot!

Answer: Before going into anything technical or instructional, one does have to learn to listen to those who create such wonderful style in guitar playing as indicated. Through their recordings or at their performances.

Years ago it was Chet Atkins for me that created such a desire to even pick up the guitar as a choice in instruments. I couldn’t get enough of his records even before I had a guitar of my own. I loved the music he expressed through his mastery. And when I did get my first guitar, I played along with those records.

I didn’t realize at the time but it sort of fell together over time to achieve such a style. What helped was to first conquer cross-picking patterns, strokes, and rhythm techniques soon enough in my first years of learning. I dropped the pick, grew nails on my right hand and replaced that one pick, with three natural ones to do the work instead. (Oh, but I still use picks, but no longer ask for one in any music store.)

I wasn’t certain what style I had achieved until I saw Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul and Mary) play live and realized I have been using my fingers as he had, for years. More of a banjo technique. Which is how many of country music fame went from, to the guitar. ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ was one of the first songs I could play his style.

And this goes back to ol’ Merle Travis and his style, who inspired Chet Atkins to be so creative in his works when he use to listen to him over the radio in his past.

Not too long ago, when trying out one of my last favorite guitars at a music store (I bought the thing shortly after), the manager told me that I sounded like this Doyle Dykes fella and I should go see him at one of his concerts. And I did.

Doyle use to play backup with ol’ Mr. Guitar, Chet Atkins, on many of his recordings. Neat-O.

Fancy that. Just listen to the music, and eventually, you’ll get the hang of it too.

And to mention as well, Tommy Emmanuel was inspired by Chet Atkins too. Talk about a ‘Certified Guitar Picker’ indeed. Heard the man play.

Wow.

(Check him out on your local PBS television station line up sometime. He’s been part of their program lately and provide recordings for their ‘donations’ in support of public broadcasting.)

Enjoy the experience when you catch on.
