Been Learning the Acoustic Guitar for One Year?

Another learn guitar question has come in this week. Let’s tackle it straight away:

Question: I’ve learning the acoustic guitar for an year now . I want to know that what all chords , patterns ,techniques , etc. am I supposed to know by the end of one year . I want to know this so that I can judge whether I am going at a regular pace or not , or judge how my teacher is . Also , I’ve heard that you have to play a minimum of two years on the acoustic guitar , to progress onto an electric guitar . Is this true ? Thanks :)
Answer: I don’t think there’s a one-size-fits-all answer. You progress as you progress. Too many variables. Also as every teacher teaches very differently there’s the idea of what order you learn things, what approach the teacher is using, etc. etc. Similarly there is no official anything to say "you have to play this instrument first for X years" anywhere in music. Are you enjoying your study? Do you feel you are learning and progressing? Rather than focus on what you know now, consider how you learned it. That’s the measure of your teacher. And probably the measure of your success as a student.

I Took 2 Yrs of Rock Guitar Lessons, I Want to Learn Finger-style Now, Are My Rock Lessons Gonna Help?

What a great guitar lessons question:

Question: Will my rock guitar lessons that I took gonna help me a little or quite a lot learning finger-style acoustic guitar?
Answer: Yes, not with your picking/plucking hand, but with your fretting hand. You’ll have the advantage of having a faster fretting hand, which is always a plus. Finger picking is a style in it self, even so, any other styles you have learned to play will contribute to your skills and help you progress more rapidly when you learn a new style.

Productive Way to Learn Guitar?

We’ve had a reader question come in on the subject of learn guitar. Let’s take a look:

Question: Since I have begun learning the acoustic guitar I have thought of ways to teach myself. One being dinkering around and making my own stuff up and the other way being learning songs by liked artists. I tryed learning songs but I don’t have the attention span to learn it all and often start playing my own stuff. So the question is what are the pros to learning songs and does it overweight making your own material? (from a beginners stand point)
Answer: ur question was kinda confusing but i think or hope that i answer this properly.
playing other peoples songs is a good start so you can learn how to play all the chords and get more practise etc… and i know what you mean by no attention span… i’m the same way. but with like piano as well. i’ll sit down and start playing some music then i’ll like forget that and start playing my own thing and then i’ll just walk away and come back later.
lol i saw this on the internet and its just so true:

http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://laurajul.dk/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/23735_540.jpg&imgrefurl=http://laurajul.dk/page/38/%3Ftheme_view%3Dnormal%26wptouch_redirect%3Dlaurajul.dk/2010/12/17/nike-sneakers-talons-aiguilles/&usg=__-BjXbaHXLJ_j8itgZop5bBGzh6c=&h=551&w=400&sz=38&hl=en&start=18&zoom=1&tbnid=_Z9tqEVfxksSIM:&tbnh=133&tbnw=97&ei=RJyjTbv0KYf2tgP_msn6DA&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dartistic%2Bprocess%2Bgraph%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1345%26bih%3D544%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1

so don’t worry playing other music does not hurt your own music. it might influence it sound wise but just make sure they don’t sound too similar and you’re set!

good luck!!!

Shouold I Learn the Guitar?

We’ve had a reader question come in on the subject of learn guitar. Let’s take a look:

Question: I am really inspired by a band..so i want 2 learn the guitar and next term we are covering instruments such as guitars, drum kits, keyboard and the MIC (aka: singing :D )

i was planning on learning how to sing but it costed ALOT compared to my flute lessons.

So, next on my list is guitar. I want to know how long will i need to learn the acoustic guitar for before I use an electric one.

AND how much will acoustic guitars/lessons cost? Should I learn it?

Answer: okay idk about singing but i strongly recommend you to learn to play the guitar. i had the same question 1 year ago and i decided to buy me a guitar and am playing now in my church witht the band. and i learned alot from youtube videos and its free. at first you are going to get bored if you dont know anything about guitars but with practice and time you are going to enjoy playing. so if you want to learn acoustit get an acoustic but if you want to learn to play rock then get the electric and a small practice amp.
there are methods online. youtube is the best, you can find alot og techniques and more. so yea man go get your guitar. and its not true that you have to learn acoustic first

Good Way to Learn Guitar Besides Personal Lessons?

What’s this week’s guitar lessons question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: I just found my acoustic guitar and I’m home schooled so I’d have a lot of time to practice. But monies tighter recently with parents and stuff so is there a good way learn acoustic guitar for complete beginners other than going out and taking lessons?
Thanks guys, those are pretty good suggestions. I Will probably get books on how to learn the music like cords and stuff like that.
Answer: You need a few books to teach you the basics. Like goto your book store and get Guitar for dummies or Similar. There are probably more specific ones, that may even be focused on acoustic guitar. It doesn’t really matter which ones you get – just get a few and compare what they teach. You want to learn chords, a simple song or something, and then learn to read tabs.

You need the internet to find tabs, to learn a bunch of songs to bring you to an intermediate level.

Books can give theory too.

A metronome will help a lot, as will being able to record yourself. Hooking a mic up to a PC can do this with audacity, but there are also a lot of portable recorders out there that have pretty good built in stereo mics (Zoom H series, Tascam, Sony).

If I Want to Learn to Play Guitar Do I Have to Start of in a Acoustic Guitar?

What’s this week’s learn guitar question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: because I want to learn to play rock music but my parents what me to start off in a acoustic guitar so then I could play better on electric but i think it would be a waste of time and money to buy a acoustic guitar to end up playing a hole other kind of music but they don’t believe me i need help
Answer: Your parents are completely wrong. You can learn equally well on an acoustic or an electric so I always advise people to start with the one that will keep them more motivated. You see, it’s the motivation that keeps you practicing and learning until you’re successful. It’s crazy to start with an instrument that you basically have no interest in.

Start with an electric guitar and don’t look back. Good luck, and don’t forget to get lessons.

Can Someone Help Me Pick a Good Song to Learn on the Acoustic Guitar?

I just love answering these learn guitar questions. Here’s another:

Question: I want to learn a finger picking song. I’m having problems finding a song that sounds nice and i want to learn. I DO NOT want anything simple. I want you to pick out the MOST DIFFICULT song you can think of. The kind of stuff Tommy Emmanuel plays. Just preferably nothing by him.
Answer: Try learn this takagi masakatsu cover like this chap does so brilliantly, originally on piano and one of my favorite songs and if you learn this you will be a god amongst men.

Id really like to learn rock, folk and classical.

Answer: I learned on a guitar like that, my mom’s Harmony, until I was 12 or so and bought something better.

You can learn with it if you’re not too discouraged by its tone. You might find a better one for $50 that’s used. Good luck.
