Another learn guitar question has come in this week. Let’s tackle it straight away:

Question: Does anyone know of any good tab (preferably not power tabs) or video that will teach me how to play Cannonball Rag?
The biggest problem I have is figuring out the right hand of the song. I have been watching two videos on Youtube:

This is the version I would like to learn but, I can only figure out from 2:17 – 2:41

I don’t think this one sounds as pretty but I figured out from 0:20 – 1:00

The first video shows me all of the chords but it never really talks about the picking pattern (besides the bass)

The part I don’t know in the second video doesn’t really talk about the left hand or right hand.

I apologize for how jumbled this question is, it is just hard to explain.

Answer: I’m thinking you are reading too much in to learning all this. I thought Randy Bachman broke down this lesson really well. He broke the whole song down in to it’s components. He shows simpler ways to play the various changes, as well as more complex variations.

The song it’s self is far simpler than it sounds. Slow down and take in all Randy is saying and showing. Use the simpler variations first, until you become more comfortable with the piece.I think if you slow down and take in this lesson one piece at a time, you’ll soon be playing it in the way you’d like.

A learn guitar question that should definitely interest you all this week

Question: What are TUBES?
What are AMP HEADS and why need them when all these switches seems to comes with a "box"
why would anyone spend over or close to $1000.00 when you just want to use around a home ? I would say may be use 10, 15, or 50? watts is ENOUGH ??

Answer: Ok I’ll bite.

Tubes are shorthand for Vacuum Tubes, the predecessor of the transistor. They were king of the audio hill from the 1920s until replaced by the transistor, which is smaller, cheaper to make, lasts longer, doesn’t generate as much heat, and has better electrical characteristics for less harmonic distortion of a signal. They are used for amplification primarily although other types exist. That said there is a loyal following in the audiophile and music world that insists that despite inferior specifications on paper, tube amplifiers have a warmer mellower sound than solid state (transistors) that is more pleasing to the ear. A drawback to tube amps is the higher voltages and currents required mean big heavy transformers that make them weigh a ton compared to a transistor amp of the same output power.

An amp head is basically the preamp and main amp stages in a separate case apart from a speaker cabinet. It’s just a box of electronics, no speaker(s). This is done for easier handling and the fact that circuits, particularly tube circuits with tubes mounted in open sockets, don’t last long when subjected to heavy vibration, which is exactly what speakers do what you’ve got your amp cranked to 11… I’ve repaired integral amp/speaker combos like Peavey Classic 30s with broken solder joints on the tube sockets because they hang the tubes down behind the speaker and they vibrate.

Concerning power, it’s true that you might play a 15 and a 50 at the same volume but there is a difference. The 50 has a lot more headroom, which is a way to say it can track a rapid change in amplitude and drive the speaker more accurately and without getting into clipping. It just sounds better even if the volume is the same because it isn’t running out of power on signal peaks.

I have done and am pretty good at the basic open chords – switching is easy for me now. I have done the strum patterns and I’m pretty good at that too.

what should I move on to from here…keep in mind my short – term goal is to play Blues & Jazz. Long term, all of the genres ( Gospel, Blues, Jazz, and Country – and pretty well).
I appreciate all of your replies and advice….

Have a Very Merry Christmas . one and all

Answer: Blues and jazz are very different styles of music, blues being the easier of the two to learn, being composed of simple chord changes and only a few scales. Jazz requires a lot of theoretical knowledge in order to really understand it.

I would suggest learning jazz last. I learned the various genres in this order: punk, blues, rock and R’n'B, metal, classical, flamenco, and finally, jazz.

Oh, and you have a very Merry Christmas as well.
