I just love answering these learn guitar questions. Here’s another:
Question: Hey, I love bands like August Burns Red, All that Remains, Bullet for My Valentine, Bring Me the Horizon, As I lay dying and etc. And I really wanted to start and learn how to play guitar for songs like this. I have no experience with the guitar, and I do no intent to spend money on lessons, I already have an amp, guitar and etc. I just need to know where I can go to play guitar, and especially guitar for the type of music I like. Thanks!
Answer: I play pretty much the same stuff, well. Go buy a book or two on guitar, I used Mel Bay, go through the whole series, I think there’s 7. By then you should be good. But while you’re doing all of this, learn as many songs as you can by artists you like. I found All That Remains, As I Lay Dying, Job For A Cowboy, The Black Dahlia Murder, and August Burns Red to be very helpful with technique. Also learn as many types of music as you can. I always find myself using things used in other genres such as Jazz, Funk, Blues, pretty much anything. Also learn a lot of scales, as many as you can, Major, Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor, Melodic Minor. Then start with modes. Modes are godsends when you know the exact sound you want to create.
Another learn guitar question has come in this week. Let’s tackle it straight away:
Question: So, I reeeaalllly wanna learn. I have an old electric in my house with the amp but while playing around with trying to tune it, i broke 3 strings lol =P. I wanna learn how to play guitar myself because I don’t have the money for guitar lessons. How should I start and go along? I know and can play a few chords like G major, C major, E minor, D minor because my friends likes to show me and let her play on her guitar. Should I start like that, just memorizing all the chords?
Help appreciated =]
Answer: you could watch free lessons on the INTERNET, YouTube for example (go on and type how to play "the name of the song" on guitar)(or how to play the AM chord)(or "beginner guitar lesson number 1" and they will start from the complete bottom for complete beginners its easy to follow) or "freeguitarlessons.com" (i think that’s what its called) online lessons are helpful and some of them explain really well that’s how i started
but you could start by finding a song you like that has those chords in it and start by practice to move your fingers from chord to chord in tempo. then when you reach that level you could start learning more chords, as to not confuse your self by taking in too much information at one time. you just need to practice ALOT and try not to get bored because everything at the beginning is difficult and a pain when you cant do it at the first, second or third trial you just need to stick to it the first parts the hardest. GOOD LUCK!
Keep the learn guitar questions coming! I liked this one:
Question: I’ve been playing a little under a year and I have a quite small list of songs that I know how to actually play. Such as, Drive by Incubus, Closing Time by Semisonic, Wonderwall by Oasis, and Couple songs by 3 Doors Down & City and Colour. and I feel a bit behind compared to my friends.
I’ve recently gotten a acoustic so I’m kind of limited to some songs that I would like to play, and I would like to learn more songs.
Any help out there? Also any sites that I could also check out that informs about Scales, Ect.?
(Places that you’ve actually been to, not just google’ing and then posting it saying it seems legit) I know alot of people do that on this site.
Answer: I definately recomend learning stuff from Mason Williams. He wrote Classical Gas, and its an amazing fingerpicking song. Its a good song to practice your fingerpicking not to mention, its a very beautiful song. Um, if you really really absolutely want to amaze crowds and just to be different in your style, I recomend learning ‘Slap Acoustic Guitar’. There are all sorts of amazing guitarists that have this style of guitar, I always get the ‘jaw drop’ effect whenever I play music like that. You should look up ‘Candy Rat Records’ They have amazing artists with beautiful music. Excellent Choice on the acoustic
,
Look up Andy Mckee,
Acoustic stuff by Zakk Wylde is good aswell,
I dont know, Add me

and ill give you more recomendations if you like.
Another guitar lessons question has come in this week. Let’s tackle it straight away:
Question: Alright, my friend wants me to join his band, and has let me borrow one of his lesser quality guitars, an amp, and obviously the case and pick. Basically, he taught me what everything on the guitar was called, the neck, headstock, frets, strings, blah blah blah.
Problem is after that, he left. Leaving me to figure out how to play by sometime in October. Is there anything that people out there can tell me? I know that a lot of guitar players (By the way, he wants me to play rhythm guitar if that helps) were self taught, but how? If there are any free online instructional videos and/or guides that someone can link me to, please do.
And if there are any people who have tips and pointers to give me, I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks!
And no, saying blah blah blah doesn’t mean I’m not into it. I really want to learn, but I thought it would be a bit pointless to go through each piece of the guitar that I can identify, seeing as that’s not what I need to be taught.
However, think what you want.
Answer: blah blah blah, looks like you’re not really into it.
Edit: Never let anyone force you to learn to play a ‘position’. Tell him you’ll look into it and concentrate in that major but never settle down for it. Your goal is try to learn everyhing that interests you.

Question: aha i know i gotta practice but i do every day and i just cant get it!
help please? any like simple tips would be awesome [: thanxx [: <33
without me having to go to lessons?
&& also what tips would help mee learn to play the acoustic guitar quickly? including changing chords quickly? aha thanxx [:
Answer: Go slow and steadily speed it up. That applies to anything you are learning on guitar. Even if you think you can just dive in a play a new scale at full speed, don’t. Go slow and steady, go from one chord to the next strumming steady, slow, constant beats. Speed up a little bit at a time. After a few weeks practicing everyday you should master going from one chord to the next in a flash.
Which brings me to my next bit of advice; never expect learning guitar to be quick. Whether it is going from one chord to another or learning a full Hendrix solo, expect it to take a lifetime to learn and do not give up. You can’t learn 10 new chords in a day and use them again next week. You have to spend weeks learning something, then use it regularly if you don’t want to forget it.
What’s this week’s question? Let’s dive straight in…
Question: I have a guitar, shoulder strap, amp, cable…..
how about chair ?
Tuner ?
and also
Music book stand ?
so I need these? what kind?
Answer: a chair (computer chair works good) and a computer with internet. Thats all i used to learn. Find songs you like and look up on youtube how to play them or go on 911 tabs and search for them.
This week’s question is a good one. Let’s have a look:
Question: I’ve played for 2 1/2 years now, and lately I feel like I’m not getting as far as I want to at all. I really considered taking lessons, but I kind of fear that the tutor will drown me with super-easy things or just doesn’t understand my style (lots of acoustic-lovers up here). Some stats,
-I don’t know music theory, but I’m taking it my junior year
-I don’t know many scales (I know, I fail right? I just don’t know which I’m playing)
-I barely know chords
-Don’t know how to sweep, I suck at tapping
-In short, my preferred style is like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2SucmKpcl4&feature=related
-For my band, I’m lead guitarist so I guess melodic things help more
Kind of a minor thing but I wanted to learn that above video and play it before I graduate high school ;( My main issue for that is sweeping though.
Oh, in short I just wanted to ask how effective lessons are..
Answer: i was in a position similar to yours, except maybe a little further along (i knew all the basic chords and barre chords, and like 3 jazz chords). i started taking lessons a few months ago, and i’m already MUCH better. i actually stopped weekly lessons, because i figured out what i need to practice and wanted time in between lessons. no matter what style you want to play, lessons will almost always help (unless you find out you actually know more than your teacher…that happened to me when i got a sub
)
so yeah. go take lessons.
This week’s question is as follows:
Question: I have a electric guitar at the moment and also a piano. I’ve learned piano for a decent amount of years now ( 3 or 4 ish) and my parents won’t let me quit and i want to learn electric guitar. I’m not interested in the sound that the piano makes. I dislike classical music and I’m more engrossed to rock music (electric guitar). I once heard or read somewhere that you play an instrument better if you like the song :3 so how do i convince my parents that i should learn electric guitar instead of piano? I also dislike practicing on the piano because its downstairs and I like to practice in peace and without being criticized or applauded. With the guitar, I’m able to practice anywhere and since without the amp a electric guitar’s sound will be very low, i’ll be able to practice at night too.
I have a guitar 4 christmas
Answer: Well if they really aren’t gonna let you, it’s worth having a go at teaching yourself how to play basic guitar. Just all your basic chords and you’ll be able to play a lot of songs. I started out like that, and was in a band, with no lessons – a successful band. I have a few lessons now, just to get more professional about it, but it’s easy to learn with the internet! Just find out all your basic chords, learn them, learn moving from chord to chord, and try to get faster, then broaden your knowledge, and get playing some music. There’s this guy on youtube who is good at teaching guitar – http://www.youtube.com/user/Acousticspearchucker – he’s helped me a lot. Another thing is, a lot of famous bands have guitarists who have never had lessons. They’re not amazing guitarists, but still good. An example is Tom Delonge of Blink 182. He got given an old guitar, and just taught himself. Mark Hoppus taught himself base too, and look how far they got. When you’ve got your basic chords, use ultimateguitar.com – it probably has every song ever written on it. Good Luck. x
This week’s question is a good one. Let’s have a look:
Question: His teacher recommended that he buys his own electric guitar as the ones provided in the school are a bit naff and a bit big for him … can someone please advise me on what i should be looking for or recommend a good website for me to visit … thanks ….
I would like to add i am not going to rush into this with my eyes closed i do know what kids and their fads are like, i have 3 sons…. Just curious because if it is something he is interested in i want to give him all the support and encouragement that i can … He suffers from mental health problems (OCD & Depression) and i think it may be a good outlet for him…
I cant tell u what a jizzumonkey is or i will have to kill u
Answer: i don’t know where you are (and that info would really help), but i suggest getting something inexpensive that comes lumped together with the amp, cable and (sometimes) tuner. i know the fender starcaster is the one that’s substituting squires now in this department. and if you live in the states, Costco is a great place to buy it, but i’m thinking the use of the word naff suggests otherwise *grin*.
here’s the deal: fender has a kid’s electric guitar that’s small and good for little hands. it’s cool; it’s going to get the image that your son wants, and it’ll fit his fingers better (though, i often start third grade kids on full-sized electric guitars).
it’s a good idea to get a straight suggestion from your son’s teacher. he really shouldn’t be so vague. he should tell you exactly what he wants your son to have.
musician’s friend is a good site that will give you a look at the guitar. it’s called the mini strat and the item number in MF is 510421. check it out….ask the teacher if that’s what he has in mind.
www.musiciansfriend.com
good luck.
EDIT: and contrary to traditional thought, STARTING WITH AN ELECTRIC is a great idea for a kid. it’s usually much more accessible on the neck, so it’s easier to get successful at AND it’s cool. let’s face it, for most kids, if they feel what they’re doing isn’t cool, it won’t work too long!
A tough electric guitar question this week. Let’s dive straight in
Question: also does any1 know how hard it is to play 1 because i never have but want to self learn?
