How Long Does It Take to Learn Electric Guitar?

We’ve had a reader question come in on the subject of learn guitar. Let’s take a look:

Question: how long does it take?

Answer: How long is a piece of string?

It depends on the person.
Someone with musical talent and experience – it’s possible to learn it to a very high technical standard within a year if you put in the effort.
Someone with musical talent – ~minimum of 4 years, if you put in the effort (to get to a high technical standard).
Someone with no musical talent – unmeasurable. Its more to do with their ability to learn skills theoretically.

To learn the basics (basic techniques, chords etc.) a couple of months if you are musically able (on avg. can take days if you are a true musician)

To master it, decades. The key word in this answer is ‘technical’. There is a difference between being able to play and making it sound good.

Modern Rock Songs to Learn on an Electric Guitar for a Beginner?

Question: modern rock my teacher teaches metal/screamo songs and he asked what song i would like to play next
anything good? PS: i like BVB, AA, etc

Answer: White Zombie – Thunder Kisses
ACDC – Back in Black
Metallica – For Whome The Bell Tolls, No Remorse
Megadeth – Symphony of Destruction
Tool – Stinkfist
Black Sabbath – N.I.B, War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man
Type O Negative – Black No. 1

Stuff like that. These are the few songs I started playing when I first started. Not exactly modern, but good beginner songs.

Question: I’ve been playing guitar for about 4 months now so i’m not as big as a newbie like i use to be, I’ve got a electric guitar and my dad reckons i should learn guitar scales and everyone on internet reckons to be a good guitarist you should learn your basic scales, So i thought i might as well give scales a try but i don’t know where to start? Does anyone know any good ways to start? (Don’t post video links please).

Answer: The first thing you need to do is learn the shapes of the various scales. On a guitar, if you can learn the patterns you can apply them anywhere. For example;

———————————————– Is the E harmonic minor scale. You can use this pattern on all frets.
———————————————– on the 6th string, and try moving it around and learning all the
————————————-13 14— minor scales.

Here is another pattern; this is the E major scale. Again, move it around the fretboard and learn all the scales that way.

How Hard is It to Learn to Play the Electric Guitar?

Question: I really, really want to play the electric guitar and get to play songs by like The Runaways and Joan Jett I’m planning on buying one soon, a cheaper guitar to start off, but i am just wondering, is it hard to learn to play? I know every instrument has a level of difficulty, but is the guitar harder than most instruments? I’ll practice a lot in my spare time and take a few lessons so how long might take to become good at playing? Thanks!

Answer: Guitar is one of the most commonly played instruments overall, and definitely not the hardest (+of all guitar, electric is easier to start due to strings being closer to the neck if it’s adjusted). It’s comparatively inexpensive, has humongous amount of players who can get you started and lots of info avail online.
1)The quickest way to get started will be to get a few lessons from someone who will show you how to hold your hands about right (it’s personal, but all works around same idea) and will give you fingerings for basic open chords to practice on your own.
2)After you lay that foundation, you’ll start with bar chords and can start getting in whatever style you want on your own.
3) great support for advanicng will be internet – tabs are great if you want to do covers. (www.911tabs.com, youtube has bunch of stuff but start of with real people)
2 hours a day of moderately intense practice and you’d be free to do whatever in 2-6 month
ps. for electric guitar you’ll need an amplifier. make sure you get one to be loud enough

Answer: Well i dont have any from those bands (good bands though!) but believe it or not play that funky music white boy is the easiest and first song i ever learned to play. but you could look up some songs for beginners so you can learn the songs you want to play just at a slower easier pace. hoped this helped man. best of luck

I Am 31 Years Old. Is It Too Late to Learn to Play Electric Guitar?

Question: I’m a dentist and therefore my hands are my livelihood. While i’ve always had decent dexterity, I’m curious as to whether the finger soreness or just the general learning curve for someone my age is a major deterrent.

Answer: You will have sore finger tips for a while and then you will build up calluses that will prevent any pain. Start right now! I think if there is anything you want to do or learn, it is better late than never.

Should I Keep Taking Guitar Lessons?

Another guitar lessons question has come in this week. Let’s tackle it straight away:

Question: ive been learning (electric) guitar and taking formal lessons for a year and a half. ive learned and improved a lot and im beginning to feel that maybe i can just teach myself from here on out (since i know the basic theory and technique). its just its getting kind o expensive.

Answer: Music lessons teach you basically only the foundation at the start, whereas as you progress further into the lesson, it is more on learning new techniques and tactics. If you’re not intending to major in it or do a performance, just playing and learning it for fun, I suggest you stop the lessons, especially if it’s expensive.

Where Can I Find Classical Guitar Lessons and Exercises?

Question: I play the electric guitar and I’m familiar with music theory and everything, but my problem is that I can only play single notes. I can’t even dream of playing the chords and the melody at the same time. I can do that on the piano, but it seems impossible on the guitar.
I want to be able to play great classical pieces on the guitar.
Is there a book/website or anything besides a human teacher where I could improve my guitar playing?
