Question: Basically, I’d like to learn some new material that ISN’T cliche (i.e. Good Riddance, Hey There Delilah, etc), but still fairly well-known. I can sing well, mid-baritone to high tenor voice, and want some new songs I can play along to on my acoustic. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Seriously, we can’t really answer this question for you. Just pick an acoustic song that you like to listen to, look up the tabs on ultimate-guitar.com, and learn it. The songs we like won’t be the same as the ones you do.

Question: I’ve had a slide for years now, but I can’t really use it. I don’t have the luxury of exploring alternate tunings as my only guitar needs to stay in standard for gigs.

Are there good (non-video) articles online? What are some good songs to improve my slide playing?

Answer: Is it really that big of a deal to tune your guitar differently while playing slide, then tune it back later? It only takes a minute or so.

If you’ve got a floating bridge, then I understand. Otherwise, you’ve got no excuse.

Learn some stuff from famous slide players. Check out some of Duane Allman’s stuff… maybe some Dan Auerbach, Ry Cooder, Allen Collins, Rory Gallagher, Son House, Derek Trucks, Johnny Winter, or Jeff Beck.

The best way to learn to play like that is to actually learn that music.

Question: Someone gave me their old guitar a long time ago, and I’ve been meaning to learn to play it. What’s the best way to do so? I know I need to learn chords, but is there a good, free site that could get me started?

My long-term goal is to be able to play songs I like, and popular songs (and also sing). One of the first on my list is Mango Tree by Angus & Julia Stone:

Any thoughts on how long I should work on the basics before attempting that song? And what are some good songs with basic chords I could learn early (after working on chords, of course)?

Thanks for any advice.

Answer: Well, unless you want to go and learn from a professional, I would suggest the Hal Leonard book series, so you can teach yourself. My brother learned from it and I’m currently learning from it; it’s pretty good.

Question: im a beginner. i know a few pieces of songs like the intro to dream on, by the way by the red hot chili peppers, low rider, etc.
Answer: Could have lied by the chilis, just learnt the rhythm part, but the solo is beyond me for now.
Everlong by foo fighters is great and really easy but drop D tuning (you have to drop low E string to D). Well worth it!

Question: Okay I’ve played for 9 and a half months now but I feel like I’m underachieving.
There’s this Band club at my school and lots of people are asking me to audition but I can’t play anything. Do you know any good songs I can play to impress them? Also, I want to learn how to improvise solos. Where do I start?

I can jam in Am. (Blues)
I can easily learn Greenday songs, but they’re all power chords.
I seem to have the habit of only learning the intro to a certain song.
I can play some Clapton songs
I can pluck.
I can mute.

So what do you guys suggest?
Please dont give me sh** about smells like teen spirit, I’m not that much of a noob.

I can play Stairway too, Just not the solo.
I tried master of puppets and I think I can manage it but it’s too long.

And the guy who said Cliffs of Dover- LOL.

Answer: i disagree with the above answer: youre clearly a rookie, and classical gas is an advanced song, so anyone suggesting stuff like through fire and flames dosent know what theyre talking about.

now, here is a vital lesson in music: being a rhythm player is more important than being a solo guitarist, because without a rhythm, most (i say most because a rhythm guitar isnt always vital) solo guitarists are just going mental-fast around scales without a background: boring, and easy to come out of time.

so, play something that has a diverse range of rhythm and solo, particulalrly if it has an odd time signature. dont play anything too advanced for yourself.

the jam in Am is an excellent choice, just use some dominant 7th chords instead, or a shuffle (google the aformentioned). and if anyone asks why you arent soloing, explain that rhythm is much more important than solo. unless theyre idiots (lol), this may turn them in your favour.

soloing; soloing uses multipule scales, mainly the following in order of importance: pentationics, scales, arpeggios. obviously you need chords to solo over, but dont worry about that for the moment. now, learn pentatonics: practise them over and over, and over time, you WILL develop them into somethign you can solo over because yoll learn what sounds good. then move onto scales (moveable). do the same; frequent practise.

now, some songs for rhythm. time of your life – green day, a generic blues shuffle, paradise city – GNR including riffs for a bit of showmanship ;) , a SLOWED DOWN and simplified version of rude mood by SRV. SLOW IT DOWN and simplify it or you will sound sh!te, theres no way youll be able to play at 260 bpm after 10 months.
