How Should I Go About Learning How to Play the Guitar?

Another learn guitar question has come in this week. Let’s tackle it straight away:

Question: So, I reeeaalllly wanna learn. I have an old electric in my house with the amp but while playing around with trying to tune it, i broke 3 strings lol =P. I wanna learn how to play guitar myself because I don’t have the money for guitar lessons. How should I start and go along? I know and can play a few chords like G major, C major, E minor, D minor because my friends likes to show me and let her play on her guitar. Should I start like that, just memorizing all the chords?

Help appreciated =]

Answer: you could watch free lessons on the INTERNET, YouTube for example (go on and type how to play "the name of the song" on guitar)(or how to play the AM chord)(or "beginner guitar lesson number 1" and they will start from the complete bottom for complete beginners its easy to follow) or "freeguitarlessons.com" (i think that’s what its called) online lessons are helpful and some of them explain really well that’s how i started
but you could start by finding a song you like that has those chords in it and start by practice to move your fingers from chord to chord in tempo. then when you reach that level you could start learning more chords, as to not confuse your self by taking in too much information at one time. you just need to practice ALOT and try not to get bored because everything at the beginning is difficult and a pain when you cant do it at the first, second or third trial you just need to stick to it the first parts the hardest. GOOD LUCK!

Guitar Lessons????????????

What’s this week’s guitar lessons question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: i really want to start playing the guitar, so i’ll have to take lessons since theres no way i’ll be able to teach myself. so are guitar lessons fun? and how do i convince my parents to let me take lessons? they always knew i wanted to play the guitar so i dont see why not?
Answer: Guitar lessons can be very fun with the right teacher. But, it is not just about fun. You must be willing to practice. I am sure that if you explain to your parents that you would like to learn the right way and you would like to take lessons, they would agree. You must agree that you will practice on a regular basis and not just give up right away.
Taking music lessons is very beneficial to your mental development. It has a tremendous positive impact on math, reading, language, dexterity, reasoning, and much more. The benefits of music lessons are well documented. It can actually raise your I.Q. level by several points. These are things that every parent want for their kids.
Just simply ask them if you can take guitar lessons. Call your local music stores and find out the rates and times available. Show them that you are willing to work at it and they should be willing to do it.

I Have to Quit Guitar Lessons?

Keep the guitar lessons questions coming! I liked this one:

Question: well right when i start to practice and be serious about guitar i have to quit. i can play chords and everything but i just havent really tried to be any better ive just been on the same level. now that i have to quit i want to really become serious about it, does anyone have any books/techniques/etc to teaching youself guitar. i really want to continue this but i just dont know how, some help would be apreciated.
joe thanks for the response but i dont want to go into a career i dont like id rather do music or photography
Answer: if you want to pay for something the best one but it’s pricey is ‘learn and master guitar with steve krenz’. also you can’t go wrong with Hal Leonard learning books. if you want to use free stuff just use youtube. they have all kinds of great vids on there that teach you how to play your fav songs. all you really need to get started is to learn how to go between chords. you should start with only a few chords and then build up. once you get better learn barre chords. they make playhing flats (b) and sharp (#) chords so so much easier!

also, you should learn your blues scale or a pentatonic scale. all that can be found by using google. there’s loads of websites where you can see the scales and hear them and then play them on your guitar. rememeber…learning the guitar is all about practice. you practice at home alone in your room. don’t overdo it but you should practice for 20 mins minium and an hour max a day. no teacher can make you great. only you can!! good luck.

What's the Best Way to Give Guitar Lessons?

What’s this week’s question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: I’ve been playing guitar for quite a few years now. People have started asking me if I would give them lessons, so I decided I should so I can get some community service hours in for our schools Key Club.
I kind of want to make the lessons fun and interesting ((even on the first day where you have to learn all the parts of the guitar and how to hold it, etc.))
So how can I make guitar lessons fun?
Also, where do I start?
And if you are a guitar teacher or if you’ve gotten lessons before, what are your experiences?
Thanks!
Answer: Anyone wanting to learn guitar wants to get palying songs as soon as possible. So for the SECOND part of your first lesson:

Find a handful of popular songs that all use the same 2 or 3 chords. Teach those chords, then tell the student that they can now play a song. List the songs until they find one they know, then guide them a little bit to get them playing the chords in the right order with an easy strumming pattern. I think for a first lesson, that can probablly take up 10 to 30 minutes depending on the student.

Make sure you use some big, bold, clear diagrams, maybe 1 chord box per A5 piece of paper.

Before you get them to play the guitar though, you can just take them through the parts of a guitar for 2 or 3 minutes, breaking it down to the headstock, neck and body. Then break each of those 3 down further; tuning pegs, main part of the neck, fretboard, frets, inlays (and how to use the inlays along the edge of the neck, basically what frets the dots correspond to), then the parts of the body. Maybe explain the differences betwen an electric and acoustic.

When you’ve named parts of the guitar, explain that you can play different open strings (then strum and name the strings in order, E A D G B E = Eddy Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddy). Then explain that rather than just going from string to string, you can go from fret to fret (then play along the E string upto the 12th fret, then back down again). I believe that one thing us guitarists take massively for granted is that most people probablly have no clue how ’strings’ have anything to do with an instrument; it would seem odd to us, but if you’ve never looked at a guitar up front and personal, I imagine it would need a bit of explaining. So basicallly talk them through how you actually get different notes out of a guitar.

Now, before you get them playing a chord, maybe explain what a chord is; 2 or more notes played at the same time to create ‘harmony’. While your at it, explain that a melody is notes played one after another. I don’t know how in depth you’ll want to go on a first lesson, but I personally would explain that a scale is a group of notes that ‘work well together’, and the mother of all scales is the C Major scale. I would then say that the C Major scale has 7 notes, C, D, E, F, G, A, B. Then I would teach them the relationship between the C Major Scale and the C Major Chord (the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes of the C Major scale. Then I would teach them the C Major scale on their guitar.

Then I would tell them that there are different types of chords; Major (happy), minor (sad). And that there is a rule you can apply to the Major scale;

C D E F G A B
Major, minor, minor, Major, Major, minor, diminished.

Take the notes of the Major scale, make the first note a Major chord, the 2nd note a minor chord, 3rd note a minor and so on, as above.

I would tell them that this rule gives you a group of chords that work well together. I might then teach them the Dm and G, then find a song that contains those chords.

Then go on to teach them a song as I explained at the beginning.

Hope this helps.

I’ve taught a few people to play and I did a teaching and learning module on my English degree. I also teach children to sail. You have to assume you are an absolute master, so the things you might think are truly basic is all new and really hard to your student. The hardest thing about teaching guitar is that you will be going over things that you find really basic, and that can get boring, but if you enjoy sharing your knowledge, that doesn’t matter.

Good luck.

Edit: It’s also important to re-cap things regularly. Maybe test them on parts of a guitar at the end of the lesson (just the easy parts, that’s quite a full on first lesson lol).

Step by Step Guitar Lessons?

I just love answering these guitar lessons questions. Here’s another:

Question: I have no patience to actually properly learn how to play the guitar, so I was wondering if there was a website or youtube channel where you can learn guitar songs step by step? I just want to know how to play songs and not have to learn all the chords and shi*. Thanks.
Answer: Yeah just learn how to read guitar tabs and dive right in. Here is a detailed video on how to read guitar tabs:

http://www.FuzzyMonkeyTabs.com/HowToReadTab.html

and they also have videos where the tabs light up while a guitar plays the song, here is the link to the simplified Fur Elise by beethoven tab video:

http://www.FuzzyMonkeyTabs.com/FurEliseSimple.html

or they have a simplified version of the Super Mario Bros music:

http://www.FuzzyMonkeyTabs.com/MarioSimple.html

You will need to practice a lot if you want to be good, but you can be playing songs from the radio in just a few hours of learning.

Should I Give Guitar Lessons?

A guitar lessons question that should definitely interest you all this week

Question: I’m 17 years old. I’ve been playing for about 3 1/2 years. I can’t ’shred’ on guitar or anything like that, but i know many chords and the notes. I thing i could do beginner lessons. I also know how to read guitar music. I don’t have a car so it would have to be out of my apartment, but i don’t know where to hold the lessons. The living room? Also, i’m kind of shy. but i really need some money.
Answer: You shouldn’t really teach, unless you know the proper way to do things. If you’ve been taught from a pro teacher, then I’d say give it a shot, but you need to know at least your basic theory to get by. You can’t just randomly shout out chords to teach these people. You can’t just teach them one or two scale shapes, unless you are able to fully explain what a scale is, and how it works… etc.

If you can work from a beginner workbook, then you may be able to get by. Just make sure you understand the material before attempting to teach it.

Is It Ok to Take Guitar and Piano Lessons at the Same Time?

What’s this week’s guitar lessons question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: like have piano lessons on fridays and guitar lessons on mondays?

would it be confusing?

Answer: If it gets to be too much every week, depending on how good the teachers are, you can choose to teach yourself guitar using this website:

What is the Most You Would Pay for Guitar Lessons?

What’s this week’s guitar lessons question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: I was looking up guitar lessons and some came up to be like $900 or like $50 an hour.
I find that to be too much and there will be better deals but i was wondering how much is just the right amount in your opinions?
Answer: I paid 10 dollars for a half hour about 8 years ago. You might want to just use the free resources online and get your feet wet before you go forking over that much money to learn the basics. http://www.FuzzyMonkeyTabs.com has video guitar tabs for the Super Mario Bros music. I think lessons are a good idea but so many people can teach you the basics online.

Where Can I Get Free or Cheap Guitar Lessons?

Keep the guitar lessons questions coming! I liked this one:

Question: I really want to learn guitar and learning from youtube isn’t helping because i don’t learn the complete songs. I am really into rock and some blues. Please help me!!
Answer: Youtube is cluttered with mediocre lessons. Ultimate-Guitar.com is the go to place for guitar tab these days. http://www.FuzzyMonkeyTabs.com has guitar tab videos that are thorough. They have songs like Fur Elise by Beethoven and the Super Mario Bros music. Some times you have to search for a long time to find good tabs especially on songs that never made it on the top 40. You could also try slowing songs down and figuring out by ear how to play them. This takes a long time in the beginning. If you play songs with windows media player on the slow setting everything is at half speed and so the song is one octave lower. This can make figuring out the song easier but there are programs out there that do a much better job than that. Good Luck to you.

Anyone Have Guitar Lessons?

Another guitar lessons question has come in this week. Let’s tackle it straight away:

Question: Alright, my friend wants me to join his band, and has let me borrow one of his lesser quality guitars, an amp, and obviously the case and pick. Basically, he taught me what everything on the guitar was called, the neck, headstock, frets, strings, blah blah blah.

Problem is after that, he left. Leaving me to figure out how to play by sometime in October. Is there anything that people out there can tell me? I know that a lot of guitar players (By the way, he wants me to play rhythm guitar if that helps) were self taught, but how? If there are any free online instructional videos and/or guides that someone can link me to, please do.

And if there are any people who have tips and pointers to give me, I would REALLY appreciate it. Thanks!
And no, saying blah blah blah doesn’t mean I’m not into it. I really want to learn, but I thought it would be a bit pointless to go through each piece of the guitar that I can identify, seeing as that’s not what I need to be taught.

However, think what you want.

Answer: blah blah blah, looks like you’re not really into it.

Edit: Never let anyone force you to learn to play a ‘position’. Tell him you’ll look into it and concentrate in that major but never settle down for it. Your goal is try to learn everyhing that interests you.
