I'm Still Taking Guitar Lessons, My 14th Month, but Why is It That Things Are Taking Longer to Master?

What’s this week’s guitar lessons question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: When I was a beginner, my teacher would give me assignments to do for 1 week.
Then, I would practice 40-60 mins daily and by the next week I would have it pretty good. After becoming "intermediate" exercises are taking much longer to master… what to do? it seems there’s no end to it.

My teacher said in 2 more years I will have a very strong foundation in guitar playing. Is he exagerating?

Answer: As a beginner, your instructor would give you fairly simple exercises to work on that you could master fairly quickly. Now as an intermediate player, the lessons become more difficult and require more time and effort to complete.
2 years is a conservative estimate. It could actually take much longer to develop a "very strong foundation" in playing. This is not a race and you should not be concerned about how long it takes you to get to a certain level, or how "hard" your lessons have become. Immerse yourself in the experience. Join or form a band with other people your age that are on a similar level as you are. Practice as much as possible and try learning other things than just what your teacher shows you. I tell all of my students to spend a couple of hours each week learning some songs or any other things that are interesting to them. As an instructor I can only help them develop a strong foundation in playing. It is up to the student to "fill in the blanks" and make the effort to really learn what I show them. When a student comes to me and says, "I figured this out" or "I was messing around with this" I get very excited because it shows that this is a student who is really into playing the guitar. I will often take a whole lesson to expand on what the student has "discovered". This makes the process much more enjoyable for the both of us. It allows me to use their interest to help them better understand a technique, or a bit of theory, or some aspect of playing that we may or may not have already covered.

I Feel That My Guitar Playing Has Somehow Stucked What Should I Be Learning and What Should I Know After 1.5?

We’ve had a reader question come in on the subject of learn guitar. Let’s take a look:

Question: years of playing the only thing i have been doing is learn song and i guess i know a little theory
Answer: don’t worry about what you should know, just have fun with it! i think you’ll find, after you learn this song, you’ll find you know how to do more than you think :)

I'm Going to Have Guitar Lessons, but I Can Only Afford About 10 Sessions(10 Hours)..?

A tough guitar lessons question this week. Let’s dive straight in

Question: will that improve my guitar playing? and can they just tell me on what are the things i can still practice?

thanks

Answer: Myself, and most other guitar instructors, teach 1/2 hour lessons once a week. This would give you up to 20 lessons. We find that we can give our students plenty to work on within that time frame. (1/2 hour per week) You can learn more in a single month of lessons with a good teacher than you can in a year of trying to teach yourself.
Be sure to look around and find a teacher that suits your needs. If you wish to learn rock and modern styles, be sure to find a teacher who specializes in that. If you want to learn classical than get a teacher who does that.
Most good instructors have some kind of degree or college level education in music. Feel free to ask about their background and education. Find out how long they have been teaching. There are many "student teachers" who do not have as much training so they can offer a greater discount. Unfortunately, some of them do not have any experience teaching or very little. If you are a total beginner than this is still a good way to learn, but if you have been playing for a while and wish to improve your technique and knowledge than you should consider someone with more experience and education.

I Want to Learn Guitar Playing but Have 2left Hand , Any Help ?

Well here’s a question I just had to answering straight away:

Question: I Want to Learn Guitar Playing but Have 2left Hand , Any Help ?
Answer: There’s this site that shows you how to play chords with your left hand. Also find a guitar teacher that can teach you how play with your left hand. Maybe you can play with your right hand, it might not be that hard because I was showing my left handed cousin how to play a few chords. When I told her that you have to turn it upside down, she said she prefered it like that, maybe you should have a go and see how it turns out?

What Do You Think is the Key Ingredient to Becoming a Great Guitar Player?

This week’s question is a good one. Let’s have a look:

Question: Playing lead and rhythm? being part of a commercial band? knowing all the scales? being able to show off to an audience? being able to replicate any song on demand? Having a different colour guitar? Playing left-handed? playing a variety of styles? having an extensive fan-base? Being able to play any song by ear? Making your own solo on the spot? etc.
Answer: Most people have not answered the question. The practice practice and more practice is what it takes to become a good guitarist, but great guitarist ? I have known many guitarists and after the initial learning process, most simply accept their position in the order of things and do not get better or worse….25 years later they are still playing the same riffs. This leads me to believe that providing you have the basics and can play, being great is very much in the lap of the gods…..you either are or you aren’t !
