For Guitar Players, How Many Years of Private Lessons Does an Advanced Guitarist Take on Average?

I just love answering these guitar lessons questions. Here’s another:

Question: I’ve been taking 2 years of lessons, and my teacher told me to take about 5-6 years of lessons total to have a strong foundation in straight picking and fingerstyle.

Is it normal to take 6 years of private lessons for someone who wants to be very good at it?

Answer: I would say that 6 years is overkill, but I never went through it. Part of becoming a musician is exploration and working solely with one instructor can limit that. But, the more you know, the better you’ll be, just make sure you find time to explore guitar and learn on your own. If you practice a couple hours per day, then you’ll be a pretty good player in 6 years, but a lot of that just has to do with time and repetition of scales and chords.

Want to Learn Guitar Scales, but Don't Know Where to Start?

Question: I’ve been playing guitar for about 4 months now so i’m not as big as a newbie like i use to be, I’ve got a electric guitar and my dad reckons i should learn guitar scales and everyone on internet reckons to be a good guitarist you should learn your basic scales, So i thought i might as well give scales a try but i don’t know where to start? Does anyone know any good ways to start? (Don’t post video links please).

Answer: The first thing you need to do is learn the shapes of the various scales. On a guitar, if you can learn the patterns you can apply them anywhere. For example;

———————————————– Is the E harmonic minor scale. You can use this pattern on all frets.
———————————————– on the 6th string, and try moving it around and learning all the
————————————-13 14— minor scales.
——————–12—14—15————
—12—14–15——————————

Here is another pattern; this is the E major scale. Again, move it around the fretboard and learn all the scales that way.

$70/hr for Guitar Lessons?

This week’s question is a good one. Let’s have a look:

Question: is this a reasonable price?

this guitar teacher is the guitarist for my once favorite band (not anymore, although I still listen/enjoy their music); the advantage is he could teach me all my favorite songs from his band. His band isn’t very famous, but I would say well recognized (they have a little more than 1/2 million fans on facebook).
he has a degree from berklee music school (?)
has been teaching for ~5years

i am just learning for fun. with not ‘goal’ to reach, except just to be better than i am right now (which is not good!)
and i have to drive ~1hr to his place.

what do you guys think?

Answer: I’d find someone closer who has equal experience and probably more knowledge and would only charge $40-$50/hr.
Most likely, a good instructor will be able to tell you how to play any song you want to know how to play.

Is It Possible for Me to Learn How to Play the Guitar in 2 Weeks?

Question: I was really into learning how to play my guitar last summer, but school and personal reasons kind of sidetracked me for awhile. me and my friend want to start a band, and they want me to be their guitarist (electric). im just wondering if i can get decent at playing the guitar in a few weeks if i practice for like 5 hours or more a day
I would appreciate if you would just answer the question. that’s what this website is for isn’t it? to be helpful? lets be machure guys….

Answer: Practice your arse off. Might take more than two weeks to get up to performance standard. Don’t pressure yourself with a time frame or you’ll miss out on all the joy of playing. Have fun!

Answer: You also need help in grammar, or possibly a new keyboard.

Hire a teacher. We can’t help you anymore than anything else you can find on the internet, or watching youtube vids.

Learn to Play Guitar Online for Free?

Question: Hello, i am a novice guitarist, i can play some basic riffs from easy songs, and have a mediocre understanding of how to read tabs.
Can anyone reccommend any sites which could teach me how to play for free?
(even just a series of tutorial videos)
I tried youtube, but i couldn’t find any decent guides.

all help would be appreciated.
cheese- thank you for the site, looks like a great place to fin tabs, but really looking for tutorials on how to play guitar, such as skill development, coordination, etc, not how to play certain songs.

How Do I Plan a Guitar Lesson for a Good Guitarist Who Doesn't Know the Fundamentals?

What’s this week’s guitar lessons question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: So I told my friend I could give him some guitar lessons and teach him the fundamentals of guitar. How should I start this? He doesn’t know any scales or that kind of stuff, but what kind of scales should I start him out with?
Pretty much he’s a guitarist who’s learned everything from online tabs. What can I teach him that’s not note reading?

Answer: Well if he has technique down good enough, that’s a good start. Unfortunately, people who do this are often unwilling to learn the ‘basics.’

Start by making sure he knows the notes on the neck; sharps, flats, etc. If that’s good, start with the minor pentatonic scales. Those are definitely the most used, they’re easy, and sound great!

Depending how much you know, you can teach him different things about theory like harmony, etc.

What is the Best Learn to Play Jazz Guitar?

Question: Im making a band and i need to be really good at the guitar. I need to know this because my favorite guitarist, Synyster Gates, went to college and studied jazz guitar and it worked out great for him. Im only 15, so i cant go to college yet. If you have tips on how to learn it, please tell!

Answer: iJamplay.com has a pretty cool jazz guitar series. Check out their introductory jazz lesson, it’s free. The site itself isn’t though. If you have no cash, you will probably have to rely on google/bing and youtube. Just search for "jazz guitar lesson" and you’ll find stuff.

Should I Buy a Guitar First or Take Lessons First ?

Question: Im a beginner guitarist , I took lesson in school but the instructor did not teach properly . I know a few basics . Currently using a classical guitar . i hate it . I listen to metal and its hard to cover songs . I want to upgarade to an electric . i dont know to whether take lessons first or buy the guitar first ,
But i will be taking lessons on lead guitar on classical .
But i will be taking lessons on lead guitar not classical . Or are they lesson where you can use any type of guitar you want ?

Answer: I suggest you take lessons first (and yes you can probably find a teacher with whichever type of guitar you want to use)
You don’t want to end up in a situation where you paid for a guitar and ended up not enjoying playing it. (Especially that that has happened before with your classical guitar)
