Another learn guitar question has come in this week. Let’s tackle it straight away:
Question: I’m a 15 year old girl and I was wondering if I’m too old to start? I’ve taken piano lessons since I was 7 and clarinet lessons since I was 10. I’m in band. I know how to read music, but isn’t guitar music different?
So should I ask my mom if I can take guitar lessons over the summer?
Answer: Thats actually a real good age to start. You are mature enough to stick with it and, with your previous musical background, you should do well. Lessons are a great idea. Guitar music uses the treble clef like most band instruments. There is another way of notating guitar known as TAB (short for tabulature). TAB is a simple diagram that shows what string to press at which fret. It is very easy to read (easier than standard notation) Your teacher will explain it all to you. Start with a basic steel string acoustic guitar. You can get one at your local music store. There you can check on lessons.
This week’s question is a good one. Let’s have a look:
Question: I have been playing the flute for three years. Will that make it easier and make me better because I have exspeance
Answer: Hello there,
Playing the flute is quite different from playing a guitar. So what you learned in how to play the flute will serve no purpose with the guitar. However, what music theory you have learned while learning to play the flute will help in that you need not learn music theory (you already know it). Even then there is not a lot that will help with the theory. I doubt that you learned about triads (chords) when studying for the flute. You probably did learn about scales. You may or may not have learned about modes. You probably learned to read sheet music. However most guitar parts are written in tabs. Tabs is a short hand method of writing music for stringed instruments. It is widely used these days. Fortunately it is quick and easy to learn. There will be some carry over, such as you probably learned how to do vibrato. With the guitar, you create the vibrato with your hands so the process is quite different. But concept is the same.
One thing about the guitar that folks with backgrounds in other instruments (other than strings) find confusing is that the same note can be played in several locations on the guitar. On the piano keyboard there is one middle C. On the guitar fretboard middle C occurs in several locations. That may seem confusing at first.

What’s this week’s learn guitar question? Let’s dive straight in…
Question: I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the guitar and those video games look fun, but do they help you learn how to play guitar?
Answer: Hi. Those games have always been a joke because they aren’t anything like playing a real guitar. However, the new Rock Band 3 has a new guitar made for it that has buttons all over the neck that make diferent notes and it has six strings that you have to strum or pick. This is the first one of the video games that will actually teach you how to play. The guitar is called a Fender Mustang Pro Guitar Controller and it’s pretty darn cool. Check it out

Question: I have about 2 days off school, and I want to try learning guitar.
my guitar is pretty old, and I’m positive it’s out of tune.
and I have NO experience with music whatsoever. :S
So I’m looking for a good tutorial that can help me tune my guitar and teach me the basics
Answer: ok this is EXACTLY what i did.
first, type in guitar tuner into google and tune it up nicely.
then learn smoke on the water on the lowest (fattest) string, E. After a few tries, you should get it down.
Then learn knocking on heavens door. This part will take a lot more practice, but youll see yourself noticably improving. Learn the 5 chords, C A G E D which spell CAGED. These are your basic chords and you can learn pretty much any simple song using these.
Personally I play guitar for a bit at night before I go to bed – dont make guitar learning a priority, but nevertheless dont stop playing it. I never call it practice either, cos practice is boring.
much love

Answer: To get anything good out of it, you have to pay for it. At least all that I’ve found, anyway. The best free thing that I’ve found is Youtube.

Id really like to learn rock, folk and classical.
Answer: I learned on a guitar like that, my mom’s Harmony, until I was 12 or so and bought something better.
You can learn with it if you’re not too discouraged by its tone. You might find a better one for $50 that’s used. Good luck.

Question: I really want to write songs. But my problem is that whenever I try to sing and play guitar at the same time I either forget in playing guitar and just sing or forget in trying to sing and just play guitar. I also just recently got a harmonica neck holder and am having Troy le doing that with guitar as well. Are there any techniques to help me get better with either or these? Or is it just practice makes perfect?
Answer: learn the song very well, then just add the voice. you have to build body memory. practice makes perfect

Question: I don’t know anything, not even the chords or notes what ever you call them. But I want to learn all that stuff.
So how long did it take you to learn or this stuff?
I mean easiest theory way to learn the chords..
Answer: It took me maybe 5 months of daily practice to learn all the notes, key signatures and everything. I would suggest 20 mins per day and learn things that interest you so that learning doesnt become a task. For example i love Metallica so i learned Sanitarium for my first song then moved on to learn evry song theyve ever written in 3 years. Patiencd is key. If you arent patient you will never br able to play. Nobody looks at a song once an can play it flawless. Here i am 15 years later and havnt found a song yet that i cant figure out, however Eruption by Van Halen gave me quite the challenge. Good luck in learning, playing guitar is the absolute best (especially electric)
I just love answering these learn guitar questions. Here’s another:
Question: Hello, i am a novice guitarist, i can play some basic riffs from easy songs, and have a mediocre understanding of how to read tabs.

I tried youtube, but i couldn’t find any decent guides.
all help would be appreciated.
cheese- thank you for the site, looks like a great place to fin tabs, but really looking for tutorials on how to play guitar, such as skill development, coordination, etc, not how to play certain songs.
