Is It Possible for Me to Learn How to Play the Guitar in 2 Weeks?

We’ve had a reader question come in on the subject of learn guitar. Let’s take a look:

Question: I was really into learning how to play my guitar last summer, but school and personal reasons kind of sidetracked me for awhile. me and my friend want to start a band, and they want me to be their guitarist (electric). im just wondering if i can get decent at playing the guitar in a few weeks if i practice for like 5 hours or more a day
I would appreciate if you would just answer the question. that’s what this website is for isn’t it? to be helpful? lets be machure guys….
Answer: Practice your arse off. Might take more than two weeks to get up to performance standard. Don’t pressure yourself with a time frame or you’ll miss out on all the joy of playing. Have fun!

How Hard is It to Learn Guitar? (thinking About Taking Up Guitar)?

Keep the learn guitar questions coming! I liked this one:

Question: I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the guitar or similar instruments like a ukulele but it always seemed too complex to learn of the fingerings and strings and stuff. I already play piano and trombone, which I thought were fairly easy to learn, but guitar has always left me wondering about how difficult it is. I think I really want to try guitar so I have two main questions:
1. How hard is it to learn how to play decently?
2. Should I take my school’s guitar class (they offer guitar 1 and 2) or take private lessons?
Answer: 1. It is really dependent on the person. People who are musically inclined will find it easier. Since you know how to play other instruments, it may allow you to have an easier time learning guitar. I think people don’t find guitar terribly hard to learn if you stick with it. It’s mastering it that makes guitar so hard. There is always more to learn. Just be desciplined to practice every day. So many people say it is impossible to learn guitar, but that is cause they play for a week and are not experts but expect to be. Push through the early stages of struggling, and once you get by that, it is so much fun an enjoyable to practice and learn new things. With some lessons, it should not take too long to get started and being able to play songs for someone with your musical background.

2. Definitely take private lessons if your deciding between the two. One-on-one sessions is what will really help you learn, not so much group classes. I would take both though if I were you. Why not?

Learning How to Play the Guitar…Help?

This week’s question is as follows:

Question: And I was wondering, what will I need to buy?
Obviously I’ll need to buy a classic/acoustic guitar, but what else would you recommend?
A pick?
Tuner?
How long does it take to get the basics down? Like, how long before I can play knowing where the notes are?
I can somewhat already read music if that helps…
Anything else?

Many thanks in advance, ow and if I have asked anything stupid my bad, I am new to this.

P.S. I am a 18 y/o girl if that effects anything.

Answer: I am also new with the guitar, but i know a good amount so ima help u as best i can. A pick is ur choice, some people like useing one and others are more into useing there fingers. If you are looking to play something electric then i would use a pick. But you can get a pick and try it out. They will let u do that at a guitar shop. With a tuner, unless you know how to use one it’s kinda pointless to get it. Sometimes they will also tune it for u there at the shop, watch them and ask questions on how to use it. Starting off playing a tuner isen’t a NEED thing. Once you get better and better i would get one. With how long it takes, well that depends on how long u practice. I got a CD for starting off and it helped me alot. A couple times aday you will soon inprove i garente. Because you can already read a lil of music that will make learning for u faster. Good luck and let me know if u need anymore help.
P.S Age isn’t important lol
Hope i helped u enough :)

Learning To Play The Guitar; Tips or Advice? :D?

This week’s question is as follows:

Question: As the title says, I’m going to be learning how to play the guitar. I’ve always wanted to, but I’ve just recently gotten the chance to take classes. ^___^ I’m usually only doing vocals for music, so guitar is going to be a big change for me.

(/extremely excited) So, I wanted to know if anyone had some advice or tips for beginners? Anything would help. I really want to do my best, and I’m sure you guys could really help me out.

Also, my friend who’s been playing piano for about five years is starting bass, so if you have anything to say about bass too, that would be greatly appreciated!

:]

Answer: Your fingertips will hurt badly the first couple of weeks. Don’t quit.

The muscles in your fingers will hurt from stretching in ways they never did. Don’t quit.

Learning to make the notes ring and chords sound takes time. Don’t quit.

You have to crawl before you walk and walk before you run. Don’t quit.

Every guitarist and bassist has made these rites of passage. Don’t quit.

any tips? is youtube good for starting from scratch?
Answer: lol I have never successfully achieved this, every holidays I promise myself to learn guitar properly, this has been going on for years. There are some good websites and a youtube video I found I will see if I can find them again. I did manage to learn a little bit, but I always stop before I can make any real progress.

There was a really good tutorial website that I had and hmm I dunno if I can find it again.
Ohh I think I found it, pretty sure it is this one! http://www.justinguitar.com/index.php

I would get started with reading guitar tabs as opposed to learning to read the actual music.
How to read guitar tabs http://www.howtoreadguitartabs.net/
For guitar tabs I went to this website http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ It has a tab for most well known songs.

Oh yeh and this guy did a few introductory guitar videos that I looked into also. http://www.youtube.com/user/danfie

Does Guitar Hero or Rock Bank Help to Learn Guitar?

What’s this week’s learn guitar question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the guitar and those video games look fun, but do they help you learn how to play guitar?
Answer: Hi. Those games have always been a joke because they aren’t anything like playing a real guitar. However, the new Rock Band 3 has a new guitar made for it that has buttons all over the neck that make diferent notes and it has six strings that you have to strum or pick. This is the first one of the video games that will actually teach you how to play. The guitar is called a Fender Mustang Pro Guitar Controller and it’s pretty darn cool. Check it out
