Question: Hey guys!
Basically, I bought a Yamaha, beginner guitar and I really want to learn how to play it because I don’t want the guitar going to waste and just sitting there!
So, I’m asking, what is the best way to learn guitar? Whether that be buying a DVD, or self teaching by learning notes. I don’t know where to start. Oh and also, how do I know if I need to tune my guitar?
PS – I’m not really considering going to guitar lessons because I don’t want to spend so much money and what not.
All answers are appreciated,
Thank you!

Answer: Well, guitars have a scale EADGBE or (Elephants are darn good booger eaters) which the first string (the biggest) Is the "Elephant" which is also the low E. Use this website to learn a few beginner chords

http://www.guitarchordsmagic.com/guitar-chord-charts/free-printable-guitar-chord-chart.html

After learning these chords, search YouTube for a real easy song to learn….

Lastly, you can buy DVDs and books at your local music store.

Hope this helps!

As you can play some nursery rhymes with them, I suggest using youtube and search for ‘Beginners Guitar Tutorial’, that way you can stop the video at parts you’re finding tricky.

Then I’d suggest trying to learn TAB, it’s pretty simple. Here’s a link:

http://guitar.about.com/od/tabchordslyrics/ss/read_guitar_tab.htm

Just practice simple melodies until you’re comfortable playing around the guitar, and in no time you’ll have taught yourself the basics.

Answer: All you need to do is go on YouTube and watch the likes of Marty Schwartz and YourGuitarSage. They can teach a lot through a camera.
As well as learning from them you need to look at chord diagrams and learn simple open chords. Once you know them and some basic strumming patterns you can play millions of songs by typing in ‘*name of song* chords’.
Learning some basic guitar theory as well could help.

You can do this yourself and teach yourself all the way if you’re disciplined, but if not there comes a point where you need a teacher if you want to get any more advanced.

Question: I’ve been learning guitar for about 4 days now and I can just about play Knockin’ On Heavens Door am I moving to slowly? also any tips on changing chords faster or is it just practice?

Answer: If you can almost play a song after 4 days, that is actually insanely fast.

And yes, changing chords faster is just practice. A lot of guitar playing is just muscle memory. I mean, you don’t have to think about how to walk do you? No, you just do it, because you’ve been doing it so long your body knows what to do.

Playing guitar is very similar. Since the chords are still unfamiliar to you, you have to actually consciously think about where your fingers go next. After you’ve been playing for a while you will just think "Eminor" and your fingers will know what to do already and do it almost on their own.

And yes, a 13 year old can learn guitar. I was only 2 years older than you when I started, and there are a lot of people who started even younger than you. Stick with it and practice a lot and by the time you’re in your early 20’s you’ll be a helluva a player and can maybe get somewhere with a band (Don’t take it as a given that you’re going to be a rock star though, it’s a LOT of hard work and a generous dose of luck for that to happen)

It may just be a phase and I may grow out of it, but is there anyway I can learn without having to pay for lessons?

There are LOADS of guitar players at my school but I feel a but gay asking them if they could teach me :/

Answer: Since you already have a guitar, my recommendation is to invest in a new set of strings for the guitar and a combination lesson book/video series. Check out the following website for some of the best prices around on guitar accessories and instructional materials.

Question: to get good at it

Answer: Here is the best way to learn guitar starting out: Learn songs. You can do this with or without an actual teacher. Having a teacher is usually good in the beginning because they can make sure you get things right, and answer any questions you have. However, once you learn HOW to practice correctly, it’s all you baby. The rest is up to you. You need to just do it consistently with new songs and you’ll learn guitar no problem.

You should practice DAILY consistently for best results. You can still learn without practicing daily, but the progress is dramatically slower. Thats the honest truth. To learn how to practice correctly, I’ve listed a resource below that you can sign up for. It’s free and they teach you everything you need to know to practice (Pit-Stop Practicing).

Pickup the theory later on and do so slowly. 80% of your focus should be on songs.

Songs have everything you need to grow as a guitarist, but you need to constantly choose songs slightly above your current skill level. This will make sure you progress.

For the theory side, you need to pick that up separately, possibly from sites like justin guitar, or by buying a book… and then GO BACK to the songs you’ve learned and see how the theory was used. Connect theory to songs. That’s the fastest way to learn theory.

If you want to learn to improvise, then you need to learn more licks, riffs, and solos from songs, then put on a backing track and start making stuff up. Only way to learn improvisation is to do it.

Question: I have about 2 days off school, and I want to try learning guitar.

my guitar is pretty old, and I’m positive it’s out of tune.
and I have NO experience with music whatsoever. :S

So I’m looking for a good tutorial that can help me tune my guitar and teach me the basics

Answer: ok this is EXACTLY what i did.

first, type in guitar tuner into google and tune it up nicely.

then learn smoke on the water on the lowest (fattest) string, E. After a few tries, you should get it down.

Then learn knocking on heavens door. This part will take a lot more practice, but youll see yourself noticably improving. Learn the 5 chords, C A G E D which spell CAGED. These are your basic chords and you can learn pretty much any simple song using these.

Personally I play guitar for a bit at night before I go to bed – dont make guitar learning a priority, but nevertheless dont stop playing it. I never call it practice either, cos practice is boring.

much love
