How long does it take to get the basics down? Like, how long before I can play knowing where the notes are?
I can somewhat already read music if that helps…
Anything else?

Many thanks in advance, ow and if I have asked anything stupid my bad, I am new to this.

P.S. I am a 18 y/o girl if that effects anything.

Answer: I am also new with the guitar, but i know a good amount so ima help u as best i can. A pick is ur choice, some people like useing one and others are more into useing there fingers. If you are looking to play something electric then i would use a pick. But you can get a pick and try it out. They will let u do that at a guitar shop. With a tuner, unless you know how to use one it’s kinda pointless to get it. Sometimes they will also tune it for u there at the shop, watch them and ask questions on how to use it. Starting off playing a tuner isen’t a NEED thing. Once you get better and better i would get one. With how long it takes, well that depends on how long u practice. I got a CD for starting off and it helped me alot. A couple times aday you will soon inprove i garente. Because you can already read a lil of music that will make learning for u faster. Good luck and let me know if u need anymore help.
P.S Age isn’t important lol
Hope i helped u enough

any tips? is youtube good for starting from scratch?

Answer: lol I have never successfully achieved this, every holidays I promise myself to learn guitar properly, this has been going on for years. There are some good websites and a youtube video I found I will see if I can find them again. I did manage to learn a little bit, but I always stop before I can make any real progress.

There was a really good tutorial website that I had and hmm I dunno if I can find it again.
Ohh I think I found it, pretty sure it is this one! http://www.justinguitar.com/index.php

I would get started with reading guitar tabs as opposed to learning to read the actual music.
How to read guitar tabs http://www.howtoreadguitartabs.net/
For guitar tabs I went to this website http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ It has a tab for most well known songs.

Oh yeh and this guy did a few introductory guitar videos that I looked into also. http://www.youtube.com/user/danfie

Question: I bought a guitar a while ago and I was just wondering how hard is it gonna be to at least play a song?

Answer: Depends on your work on it and excitement about it. When I was about nine I attempted learning guitar, but I never really did anything because at that age I guess I was more interested in running around with my friends and stuff, then I took it up again when I was 12-13 and learned ’smells like teen spirit’ in no time at all. If you aren’t really wanting to do much and don’t put a lot of effort in you can’t expect picking up a guitar and learning a bunch of songs, it takes time at the start and patience. I am talking about when you start, after you are good at your first song you feel like learning other songs and get better and better each time and when you have been playing for a while you realize that you can lear songs much faster than before. The answer to your question really depends on the work you put in it, the harder you work the better results you’ll get.

Question: I am interested in learning how to play the guitar. Is there a way other than going and getting lessons from someone? Thanks for any and all help.

Answer: Yes, there is another way. Not to brag but to show proof that you can, I learned guitar by myself under 10 minutes. If you have an iPod Touch, download an application called TouchChords. It has the entire chord library, from there, just by trying new things everyday, you can learn as much as I have, which is about the very end of the peak of intermediate. You should note that, acoustic, acoustic-electric, electric, solid-body electric, semi-hallow electric, and hallow electric are only types of guitars, as long as they only have 6 strings. ONLY learn on a six string guitar, any more or less is for people who mastered six string guitar and want a whole new instrument. So whatever type of guitar you learn on doesn’t matter as long as it’s six string. START WITH ACOUSTIC. That will take you far in your musical life. You can learn on YouTube, other websites, or if you can read Tablature or Tabs, (which I can’t read) you can learn there, it’s easy to read because millions of people say so, I may just be a special one who can’t read music. But those are some ways, hope I helped.

Another learn guitar question has come in this week. Let’s tackle it straight away:

Question: So, I reeeaalllly wanna learn. I have an old electric in my house with the amp but while playing around with trying to tune it, i broke 3 strings lol =P. I wanna learn how to play guitar myself because I don’t have the money for guitar lessons. How should I start and go along? I know and can play a few chords like G major, C major, E minor, D minor because my friends likes to show me and let her play on her guitar. Should I start like that, just memorizing all the chords?

Help appreciated =]

Answer: you could watch free lessons on the INTERNET, YouTube for example (go on and type how to play "the name of the song" on guitar)(or how to play the AM chord)(or "beginner guitar lesson number 1" and they will start from the complete bottom for complete beginners its easy to follow) or "freeguitarlessons.com" (i think that’s what its called) online lessons are helpful and some of them explain really well that’s how i started
but you could start by finding a song you like that has those chords in it and start by practice to move your fingers from chord to chord in tempo. then when you reach that level you could start learning more chords, as to not confuse your self by taking in too much information at one time. you just need to practice ALOT and try not to get bored because everything at the beginning is difficult and a pain when you cant do it at the first, second or third trial you just need to stick to it the first parts the hardest. GOOD LUCK!

Answer: I suggest you learn to play guitar first. I started with guitar, and then ukulele. I don’t know how this helped, but It’s easier to start with something bigger and learn. Then you move on to the smaller things. Just trust me. If I’m wrong, then sorry. YOU ARE NOT TOO OLD TO START. I started just a few years before you, and in my opinion, 16 is a fine age to start. Good acoustic guitars? Well, I started on my dad’s epiphone. Les Pauls are nice, but on the $$ side. Good Luck!!

Question: hiya. im learning how to play the guitar but im having trouble with the g chord. i think my fingers are just too big! its easier playing an easy g but i,d like to learn how to do it properly. are my fingers just too big or should i just keep at it?

Answer: Fingers are rarely ever too small or too big. Once you’ve mastered certain chords, you’ll wonder why you ever had a problem with them. I personally wouldn’t follow any short cuts or easy fixes. Learn to play it properly otherwise when you move on the problems you’re having now will just compound later. There are going to be so many chords where you simply can’t ‘not’ put your thumb on the back of the neck and if you’re trying to learn classical guitar then you’ll just never get around the thing as the chords become more complicated. You didn’t say what ‘G’. Is it an open ‘G’? As for muscles….if the technique is good, the less pressure you need. Try playing one note on it’s own and you’ll see how very little pressure it actually takes to hold a note down. It’s mostly technique and the brain that’s got to learn not so much the fingers. But hey!!! look on the bright side. This is the best instrument ever for getting something back from it straight away. There are some great songs written in only three chords, so you could be playing something by the end of the week. Anyone that’s good at any instrument has had to practise very hard. That’s the price you have to pay. The only tip I do have is this. Focus on your fingers…and relax every other part of your body including your arms and wrists. Once you get one or two things right…your learning will accelerate.
