Can I Be Able to Play Guitar Without Lessons?

This week’s question is as follows:

Question: I really try everyday to keep learning to play guitar. Like, I play it every day and I know some chords and I look up lessons on YouTube or Google. But my family’s pretty poor and we can’t keep affording lessons :( it’s hard nowadays. However, would I be able to be good or decent enough to play some songs I like on guitar if I played it everyday and looked up lessons online everyday?
Answer: Hello there,

Before I answer your answer, I want to say that I also disagree with the second answer. Lessons can be very worthwhile. The part about developing your own style because you do not have a teacher is pure rubbish. A good instructor will encourage you to develop your own style. I have no data to support this, but my gut feeling is that people who learn without lessons are more likely to simply copy the style of what they hear and see, because they have no one to encourage them to go beyond that. However, not everyone does have access to a teacher. Not everyone can afford private lessons. So, while private lessons are worthwhile, not everyone is going to get them.

Now to your question. Yes you can learn. Many of us originally learned without lessons. Back in my day, there was no one giving rock guitar lessons in the area. That was pretty much the case back in the 50s and 60s. Yet, a lot of good guitarists learned to play during the 50s and 60s.

It is much easier to learn to play on your own these days than back when I learned. The internet has a lot of good instructional materials available.

Here is a link to a series of video lessons. These may help you get the basics down better. This guy has a series of 12 video lessons at Youtube. He covers the basics pretty well. You can find the other lessons in the related videos section there. He uses an electric in the lessons, but most of the material translates well to the acoustic.

Just in case you have not already learned how to read tabs, here is a link to an article that explains them.

This one is a chord chart. Down load the PDF file to your computer. Then you can look through it for various ways to play a chord.

If you want to learn some songs, you can do a Google search using the song name and the word tabs. That should give you like to places that have the guitar tabs. Those will be places like 911 Tabs, Tabs.com and others. You can also use the search feature at Youtube to find lessons for particular songs. Search the song name and the words how to play or the word lesson. There are a lot of good instructional videos available on Youtube.

What Does It Take to Learn to Play Guitar?

A learn guitar question that should definitely interest you all this week

Question: I’m learning to play guitar with an acoustic. I learn to play songs by looking up the chords or tabs.

Is learning to play guitar just knowing how to play all the possible chord variations?

Answer: It depends what you mean by "playing" guitar. To me, it’s understanding what you’re doing. Knowing music theory and writing my own material. To someone else, who isn’t an avid guitar player, it might just mean that they want to know a couple songs to impress people. If you stick with it enough, you’ll strive to learn more. You’ll get tired of playing other people’s music, so if you think you’re one of those types, then start learning theory. How chords are made up, arpeggios, scales… etc.

Learning to Play Guitar and Singing?

Well here’s a question I just had to answering straight away:

Question: I want to learn to play guitar and sing. Right now I plan on it for just being for fun and to get some fans maybe on youtube. If everything goes well, maybe to something bigger but not for a while. I’m 14 so I have time. What do you think? Do you think its worth it? What kind of songs are people into these days?
Can you guys give me some people I can search on youtube, people that are solo that I can start practicing with? Acoustic for now.
Answer: acoustic or electric?

its fun to start with acoustic and mess around until you get the hang of it…pick songs with few chords so u can sing along..its easy and very fun when you get used it…making a band and becoming an artist is a different story bcuz there are thousands of bands out there tryin to do the same thing.

I'm Learning to Play Guitar, but Everytime I Play a Chord I Get a BUZZING Noise?

What’s this week’s learn guitar question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: why? and how can i stop it.
Answer: Your stance and posture is important. You should be comfortable when holding and playing. Make sure to use firm, steady pressure, one finger only on each string.
Hold the neck firmly with your thumb
You will also get a buzzy sound when playing barre chords if you play with your index finger too near to the fret and with uneven pressure.
Practice,practice,practice.
Don’t be put off by a few bum notes; even us old guys that have been around guitars for what seems like centuries still manage to get some ‘fingernail scraping on the blackboard moments’.
