How long does it take to get the basics down? Like, how long before I can play knowing where the notes are?
I can somewhat already read music if that helps…
Anything else?

Many thanks in advance, ow and if I have asked anything stupid my bad, I am new to this.

P.S. I am a 18 y/o girl if that effects anything.

Answer: I am also new with the guitar, but i know a good amount so ima help u as best i can. A pick is ur choice, some people like useing one and others are more into useing there fingers. If you are looking to play something electric then i would use a pick. But you can get a pick and try it out. They will let u do that at a guitar shop. With a tuner, unless you know how to use one it’s kinda pointless to get it. Sometimes they will also tune it for u there at the shop, watch them and ask questions on how to use it. Starting off playing a tuner isen’t a NEED thing. Once you get better and better i would get one. With how long it takes, well that depends on how long u practice. I got a CD for starting off and it helped me alot. A couple times aday you will soon inprove i garente. Because you can already read a lil of music that will make learning for u faster. Good luck and let me know if u need anymore help.
P.S Age isn’t important lol
Hope i helped u enough

Answer: Ultimate-guitar.com is the best website I’ve come across, you can search for the songs you want to play, and It’s free!
Try anything by plain white tees, oasis, the Beatles or the moldy peaches to get you started.
Guitar players often use tab which is a bit different to music- its a diagram of the 6 strings and shows you which fret to play when so its really easy. Good luck!

Answer: Just play the guitar randomly until u get to ur own solo, play it by the style that you love, ask other guitar players for tips and how they managed to do it, just flow with the guitar , u can also check for tabs, and combine some solos together, playing guitar is a whole new world to live in ^^.

What’s this week’s guitar lessons question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: I just found my acoustic guitar and I’m home schooled so I’d have a lot of time to practice. But monies tighter recently with parents and stuff so is there a good way learn acoustic guitar for complete beginners other than going out and taking lessons?
Thanks guys, those are pretty good suggestions. I Will probably get books on how to learn the music like cords and stuff like that.

Answer: You need a few books to teach you the basics. Like goto your book store and get Guitar for dummies or Similar. There are probably more specific ones, that may even be focused on acoustic guitar. It doesn’t really matter which ones you get – just get a few and compare what they teach. You want to learn chords, a simple song or something, and then learn to read tabs.

You need the internet to find tabs, to learn a bunch of songs to bring you to an intermediate level.

Books can give theory too.

A metronome will help a lot, as will being able to record yourself. Hooking a mic up to a PC can do this with audacity, but there are also a lot of portable recorders out there that have pretty good built in stereo mics (Zoom H series, Tascam, Sony).

my guitar is pretty old, and I’m positive it’s out of tune.

So I’m looking for a good tutorial that can help me tune my guitar and teach me the basics

Answer: ok this is EXACTLY what i did.

first, type in guitar tuner into google and tune it up nicely.

then learn smoke on the water on the lowest (fattest) string, E. After a few tries, you should get it down.

Then learn knocking on heavens door. This part will take a lot more practice, but youll see yourself noticably improving. Learn the 5 chords, C A G E D which spell CAGED. These are your basic chords and you can learn pretty much any simple song using these.

Personally I play guitar for a bit at night before I go to bed – dont make guitar learning a priority, but nevertheless dont stop playing it. I never call it practice either, cos practice is boring.

much love

Question: I have enough money to take one or the other, not both so don’t suggest it. There is a teacher in the area who teaches the "simply music" method of piano instruction, anybody heard of it? Then there are a few guitar teachers in the area as well. piano is a little more pricey, by around 30 bucks per month. I want to play one instrument and one day i will learn the other. I have tried to self teach myself guitar, but that has not gone over too well. I DO NOT WANT TO LEARN TO PLAY GUITAR SIMPLY FOR WOMEN gentlemen, so please refrain from using that as why. Personal experiences please would help.

Answer: I am in the same boat now. I’ve been taking guitar for 5 years and want to branch out. I can already read music and have looked at some piano music, it is totally different.

I talked to one of the piano teachers at the school I study guitar at. She told me that they prefer a real piano, they are not big on electronic keyboard because there is just no feel to the keys, or if you are going to use a keyboard at least 71 keys, but 88 is what they really want you too use. She recommended a Casio CP-100 which is an 88 key weighted keyboard that costs between 299.-399.00 So I am waiting to see if I can get one on sale.

Don’t think that 399.00 is too much to spend, because any decent guitar to learn on is going to set you back close to that or more when you figure in the cost for a setup, and a case an amp and all that. People try to learn on these cheap Squiers and Epiphones that cost $150.00. They will tear your fingers to the bone. Far better to spend the extra money and get a good Squier (Yeah the Standard Series are pretty good) You can go accoustic, but then it is even more important to get something that has good quality, and is playable. Because those are harder to learn on than electrics are. You are going to be easily looking at over $300.00 for a decent starter accoustic. But if will at least have some value to it.

I just bought a used Epiphone Hummingbird, which is a great guitar though overpriced now at $399.00. I bought it from a doctor that had started to take lessons but did not have the time for it anymore. Guitar, case and stand, $225.00. The guitar was in MINT shape and had a great set up done. It plays better than my Seagull does.

Go with what you think that you’d enjoy the most
