Answer: I wrote out a very long piece of advice thoroughly answering all your questions. However, it was too long to post on this site, so I made a public blog post about it since the advice I gave would be good for anyone starting the guitar. I re-worded your questions and published the post in my new music blog. The link is below. I hope this is useful.

Question: Ok so when I tell them I want to plan something to do they always taking me that im joking. Ok im might come up with crazy ideas sometimes but recently i was thinking of learning the guitar ( one of my goals in the future) seriously and don’t know how to tell them =/ Im thinking they’ll tell me " No ". I can’t wait to learn the guitar when i move out.

How can i tell them? Thanks in advance.
@sauce money is not the problem. The problem is their house their rules. =/

Answer: Just approach them seriously but casually and tell them you truly want to learn to play the guitar and that you’re not messing around or anything. Make yourself convincing but don’t yell at them or anything, of course. If they don’t believe you, try asking around school or looking online for places near you where you could learn guitar and write them down, show your parents you really want to learn this. Don’t give up!

Good luck!

Question: I just found my acoustic guitar and I’m home schooled so I’d have a lot of time to practice. But monies tighter recently with parents and stuff so is there a good way learn acoustic guitar for complete beginners other than going out and taking lessons?
Thanks guys, those are pretty good suggestions. I Will probably get books on how to learn the music like cords and stuff like that.

Answer: You need a few books to teach you the basics. Like goto your book store and get Guitar for dummies or Similar. There are probably more specific ones, that may even be focused on acoustic guitar. It doesn’t really matter which ones you get – just get a few and compare what they teach. You want to learn chords, a simple song or something, and then learn to read tabs.

You need the internet to find tabs, to learn a bunch of songs to bring you to an intermediate level.

Books can give theory too.

A metronome will help a lot, as will being able to record yourself. Hooking a mic up to a PC can do this with audacity, but there are also a lot of portable recorders out there that have pretty good built in stereo mics (Zoom H series, Tascam, Sony).

Answer: Your parents are completely wrong. You can learn equally well on an acoustic or an electric so I always advise people to start with the one that will keep them more motivated. You see, it’s the motivation that keeps you practicing and learning until you’re successful. It’s crazy to start with an instrument that you basically have no interest in.

Start with an electric guitar and don’t look back. Good luck, and don’t forget to get lessons.

Question: i really want to start playing the guitar, so i’ll have to take lessons since theres no way i’ll be able to teach myself. so are guitar lessons fun? and how do i convince my parents to let me take lessons? they always knew i wanted to play the guitar so i dont see why not?

Answer: Guitar lessons can be very fun with the right teacher. But, it is not just about fun. You must be willing to practice. I am sure that if you explain to your parents that you would like to learn the right way and you would like to take lessons, they would agree. You must agree that you will practice on a regular basis and not just give up right away.
Taking music lessons is very beneficial to your mental development. It has a tremendous positive impact on math, reading, language, dexterity, reasoning, and much more. The benefits of music lessons are well documented. It can actually raise your I.Q. level by several points. These are things that every parent want for their kids.
Just simply ask them if you can take guitar lessons. Call your local music stores and find out the rates and times available. Show them that you are willing to work at it and they should be willing to do it.

Well here’s a question I just had to answering straight away:

Question: I don’t know how to play any instruments and I don’t know how to read scores. I haven’t been learning to play them when I was young but now I want to. I wanted to learn to play the guitar becuase it creates a nice sound and you coul play lots of songs you wanted to with the guitar. But then I saw the violin in a anime cartoon (hehe) and I really liked it, they sounds were really beautiful and I remember my parents saying to me when I was young that i should learn to play the violin cause its the most emotional instrument in all. And I love the way people look when they hold up the violin…

Now I can’t decide on which instrument to learn…
So… I wanted some advice.

1. Which one to learn: Guitar or Violin
2. Which one is harder to learn and why.

THankyou

Answer: Violin is extremely hard. Guitar is pretty easy, I guess. I learned some of it but quit because I was too busy to keep taking lessons. A lot of people teach themselves guitar, and way more people play guitar than violin because its so much easier.

I think you should learn guitar.

Pros to guitar:
-More people play it, so if you went to someone’s house, they more likely have a guitar that you could play. Or at a party or something.
-You can sing while you play guitar. I’m pretty sure you can’t do that with violin. If you do your vibrations would probably mess up the sound of the violin. Probably not that badly though. Singing with a violin is kinda weird though.
-Its easier.
-You can find cheap guitars because a lot of people have them and they’re always someone looking to give theirs away.

Pros to Violin:
-Its smaller and easier to carry than the guitar.
-Its more unique.
-Since not as many people play it, there are probably more jobs looking for good violin players.
-People are more impressed with violins than guitars. Because it’s much harder and more unique.

Hope that helps!

What’s this week’s question? Let’s dive straight in…

Question: Okay, so here’s the thing. I play the guitar, and I go to another city once a week to take lessons. The thing is, I don’t want to stop playing guitar. But I found that if I learn from some DVDs, will make me kinda equal to that. So, instead of waking up early in the morning, going to another city, then coming back home, I could buy these discs instead and learn from them. The amount of money is the same. If I pay those live courses, or if I buy those DVDs at home, it’s the same thing. I’ve been taking live courses for 6 months, but I wanna stop after a month or two. How can I convince my parents to let me do that, but to don’t make them think as I don’t want to get there for a reason or another. How could I explain them that?
I’m on a level which gives me awareness to what I’m doing good or wrong.
I can stop the course at anytime. The payment I made isn’t for another 6 months, so I won’t lose any money if I drop out, no matter when. And yeah, there’s a lot of petrol going out.

Answer: Hard to say. I would let them know you feel like you’re waisting your time with this teacher. A lot of people feel that way when they go to an instructor. When I first started out, I learned on my own, a lot faster then when I took lessons. What eventually happened was, I thought those dvd’s and magazines were going to teach me the right way, and eventually, they didn’t. I never knew I had to learn chords or scales… I mean, I learned them by learning songs, and by learning about intervals, like WWHWWWH and stuff, but I never learned the power of theory. Over the last year or so, I’ve been trying to find websites that taught me this, and a few showed me what I need to know, but I also (after about 14 years) had looked into getting another instructor. He showed me a few things (tips, tricks and licks), and showed me how to apply some of that theory. It’s taken me a couple years to kinda grasp the concepts on my own, and I definitely would have learned faster if I kept the instructor, but I found myself not being able to go every week and wasting my money.

So, my point… it’s good to have an actual instructor for the times you actually get stuck or confused, but if you find yourself learning better on your own, then it wouldn’t be a bad idea to do that, and every year or so, find another instructor to go over things, get some stuff cleared up, or learn some new tricks.

Question: I have a electric guitar at the moment and also a piano. I’ve learned piano for a decent amount of years now ( 3 or 4 ish) and my parents won’t let me quit and i want to learn electric guitar. I’m not interested in the sound that the piano makes. I dislike classical music and I’m more engrossed to rock music (electric guitar). I once heard or read somewhere that you play an instrument better if you like the song :3 so how do i convince my parents that i should learn electric guitar instead of piano? I also dislike practicing on the piano because its downstairs and I like to practice in peace and without being criticized or applauded. With the guitar, I’m able to practice anywhere and since without the amp a electric guitar’s sound will be very low, i’ll be able to practice at night too.
I have a guitar 4 christmas
Answer: Well if they really aren’t gonna let you, it’s worth having a go at teaching yourself how to play basic guitar. Just all your basic chords and you’ll be able to play a lot of songs. I started out like that, and was in a band, with no lessons – a successful band. I have a few lessons now, just to get more professional about it, but it’s easy to learn with the internet! Just find out all your basic chords, learn them, learn moving from chord to chord, and try to get faster, then broaden your knowledge, and get playing some music. There’s this guy on youtube who is good at teaching guitar – http://www.youtube.com/user/Acousticspearchucker – he’s helped me a lot. Another thing is, a lot of famous bands have guitarists who have never had lessons. They’re not amazing guitarists, but still good. An example is Tom Delonge of Blink 182. He got given an old guitar, and just taught himself. Mark Hoppus taught himself base too, and look how far they got. When you’ve got your basic chords, use ultimateguitar.com – it probably has every song ever written on it. Good Luck. x
