Well here’s a question I just had to answering straight away:

Question: I held a Violin at the store a few days ago, but I found the neck to be far to small for me, as I am used to playing guitar. I really, REALLY want to learn Violin but I don’t think I would be able to get passed the tiny finger placement.

Do violins come in varying sized necks, or should I try another instrument like a Viola? Or another suggestion?
Assuming I end up purchasing a violin, I want one that won’t break as soon as I play it, but I also do not have very much money. Approx. < 200$ Does anyone know a place, either online or a chain retailer, of which I can get a fairly trustworthy instrument without breaking the bank?

Answer: The neck may seem tiny and fingerings small but you will adapt easily. You can not expect to play well for a while. Even after knowing another instrument you need to start like all other beginners. You will advance faster, but will go through every problem that the others would have.
Check
www.sharmusic.com
for good instruments in your price range. They also tell you what to look for in an instrument. Good to know even if you do not buy from them.

The only tricky chord for a beginner is the B minor, which ought to be played as a barred chord, but if you just play it without the barred finger, you still get a good sound. It’s such a good song it’s worth a try! Keep at it, and good luck!

Does anyone know any good ways to start? (Don’t post video links please).

Answer: The first thing you need to do is learn the shapes of the various scales. On a guitar, if you can learn the patterns you can apply them anywhere. For example;

Here is another pattern; this is the E major scale. Again, move it around the fretboard and learn all the scales that way.

Question: Please read this and help me out.. I don’t have anyone else to ask..

-Best friend and I have both been playing guitar for 1 year
-Both of us want to start/play in a band, but obviously want to be in a band TOGETHER
-He found a drummer of 6 years and rocked out with him yesterday and it went VERY well
-He gave me his bass amp a while back because I mentioned I wanted to learn the bass as a side project so he gave it to me for free (it was his first amp, he never uses it since he got a guitar amp)
-Now he is encouraging me to go out and get that bass guitar and start learning it so we can have a guitarist, bassist, and drummer, a three way band plus we have a singer lined up already.
-My problem: I donâ??t want to stop playing guitar. I LOVE guitar and I have spent countless hours over the last year learning it and I don;t want to play bass in a band, I want to play the guitar in a band. I do WANT to learn bass but just as like a side project, to have some beats to go along with guitar riffs i make.. But you canâ??t have two guitarists in a band â?? it just doesnâ??t work.
-What should I do? I want to learn bass but I donâ??t want to play bass in a band.
p.s. the catch is that he has no money to buy one (96 cents in his bank account after paying rent, living paycheck to paycheck) and I have about 2,000 saved up, and am financially stable, so only I could afford to buy a bass and now I feel pressured to buy it and learn it over guitar so we can play in a band together..

Answer: you can easily have 2 guitars in a band. one plays lead the other plays rhythm. someone mentioned green day but they even have 2 guitarists now to back up billie joe. still learn bass. i play guitar in a band as well as another person does and i am also learning bass guitar as well.

But my problem is that whenever I try to sing and play guitar at the same time I either forget in playing guitar and just sing or forget in trying to sing and just play guitar. I also just recently got a harmonica neck holder and am having Troy le doing that with guitar as well. Are there any techniques to help me get better with either or these? Or is it just practice makes perfect?
Answer: learn the song very well, then just add the voice. you have to build body memory. practice makes perfect

Answer: Obviously, you are going to begin learning some technically harder techniques, but they are often easier to learn with your new found greater ability than even the most basic concepts were as a new player.

It eventually becomes effortless to both fret and pick/ pluck any group or series of notes/ chords imaginable, provided you do so at a comfortable speed. This allows you to practice anything at a slow speed and gradually work your way up to the correct tempo, essentially teaching yourself in your own time.

A better way to answer your question is probably to tell you that practicing gets way more fun the further you get into it. Never give up; you can be as good as you want to be. And remember to make your own music!

Question: I’ve been wanting to learn the drums for a while now and was going to start saving up for a drum kit, but wanted to know what a good price would be to pay for a beginner set to learn on and hopefully last for a while? What are some brands to look for?

Have any of you had any luck buying used sets?

Also, on a side note, will learning drums help me with learning guitar/music. What with the rhythm and time that learning drums requires.

Thanks!
I’ve been playing guitar for about a year and a half now, so I wanted to try something new and I think I have a good sense of rhythm and would enjoy the drums a lot.

Answer: Since you’re experienced in guitar and music in general, you most likely know that EVERYTHING is expensive. With drum sets, its just as bad, if not worse. A good quality drum set can cost a few thousand dollars. And cymbals are a pain; most quality cymbals cost around $200 each, and some can go up to $400+, just for ONE cymbal! Most drum heads cost relatively the same, so there’s not much of a problem there. But for a beginner kit, you probably just wannna get an off-brand drum kit, which usually comes with the necessary hardware and some cheap cymbals and heads. There are tons of companies that sell off-brand kits, so I can’t tell you specifically what brand to get; however my first drum set was a Rockwell. But even a new off-brand kit usually will cost you around $500-$600. Used drum sets, whether off-brand or quality-brand, are still gonna cost you some big money, at the least being around $300. If you buy a used one off the internet (e.g. eBay), make sure you know whether or not cymbals and hardware are included.
I would probably have to say that the drums would relate more to bass guitar than anything; it’s crucial that the drummer and bassist in a band play "together" (in other words, the bassist should mostly correspond his notes to the beat of the bass drum). As you may know, playing the drums requires a heck of a lot of multi-tasking, so it does take lots of time to get used to; but since you already play guitar, it might be easier for you, since that requires multi-tasking too.
